Chapter 3 - Blood Ties and Whispers

The next two weeks passed in a surreal blur of surgical consultations, psychological screenings, and high-stakes preparations. Adrian had spared no expense; the top nephrologists and transplant surgeons in the country were flown into Philadelphia on his private jet to oversee Nora and Maya’s upcoming operation.

Every single detail was managed with military precision. But as Nora settled into her new suite on the third floor of the Vale manor, she quickly realized that Adrian’s world was far darker than she had ever imagined.

Late one Thursday evening, Nora walked downstairs toward the kitchen to brew some chamomile tea. As she passed Adrian’s mahogany-paneled study, the heavy oak doors were cracked an inch open. Harsh, muffled voices leaked into the dimly lit hallway.

“The Luciano family is pushing through the south riverfront terminals, Adrian,” Marcus’s voice was tense, edged with raw urgency. “They know you diverted forty million dollars into private trusts this month. Dominic Luciano thinks you’re going soft. He thinks you’re distracted by the girl.”

Nora froze, pressing her back against the wallpaper. Her pulse skyrocketed. Distracted by the girl? Were they talking about her?

Adrian’s response was ice-cold, devoid of any human hesitation. “Dominic Luciano is welcome to test my resolve. If his men touch a single crate at Pier 42, burn their warehouse in Camden to the ground. Leave nobody behind to explain what happened.”

A cold shiver crawled down Nora’s spine. Hearing the rumors was one thing; listening to the man who paid for her sister’s medicine casually order an act of war was another. She took a step backward, intending to flee back to her room, but her foot betrayed her, catching the corner of a heavy brass hall table. The antique vase on top wobbled with a sharp metallic clatter.

Inside the study, the voices instantly died.

Before Nora could turn, the door flew open. Adrian stepped out, his suit jacket off, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to reveal thick, corded forearms laced with old combat scars. His silver watch caught the ambient chandelier light.

His eyes locked onto Nora, flashing with razor-sharp instinct before softening into something dark and unreadable.

“Eavesdropping, Ms. Hayes?” he asked, stepping out into the corridor and shutting the door behind him, cutting off Marcus from view.

“I... I was just going to the kitchen,” Nora stammered, crossing her arms defensively. “I didn't mean to hear anything. I swear.”

Adrian closed the distance between them until he was standing barely inches away. The scent of clean cedarwood, expensive tobacco, and raw power enveloped her senses completely. “You look frightened, Nora.”

“You just ordered someone to burn a warehouse down,” she whispered, her eyes searching his uncompromising face. “Who are you really, Adrian? The papers call you an eccentric private equity baron, but the things you say... the way your men look at you... it’s terrifying.”

Adrian didn't blink. He reached out, his thumb lightly grazing the edge of her jawline. The touch was astonishingly gentle, sending a jolt of electricity straight down Nora’s spine.

“I am whatever I need to be to protect what belongs to me,” Adrian murmured, his voice rumbling low in his chest. “To the world out there, I am a monster. But to you and my son, I am a shield. You never need to fear the dark outside these walls, Nora. Because the darkest thing out there answers to me.”

Nora’s breath hitched. She should have pulled away. She should have run. But as she looked into the shadowy depths of his eyes, all she saw was an unbearable, lonely burden—a man who had spent his entire life being feared, yet somehow chose to offer her unconditional safety.

“The surgery is in four days,” she managed to say, her voice barely louder than a whisper.

“I know,” Adrian replied softly, his hand dropping from her face, leaving her skin tingling in the wake of his touch. “And I will be waiting outside that operating room until you wake up. Now go upstairs and rest. Henry wants you to read him that story about the dragons tomorrow morning.”
