Chapter 9 - The Garden Of Stars

Three months later, the spring sun had warmed the stone terraces of the Moretti estate, bursting the lilac bushes into full, fragrant purple blooms.
The heavy iron security checkpoints were still in place at the front gates, but inside the courtyard, the atmosphere had transformed entirely.
Laughter echoed from the expansive rear lawn, where a wooden playground with two swings and a cedar playhouse had been built beneath the ancient oak trees.
Elena sat on a wrought-iron garden bench, wearing a light floral dress and reading a book on early childhood education.
She had officially legally adopted the name Elena Rossi Moretti, having been named the executive director of the newly founded Julianna Moretti Foundation for Women and Children.
Sophie was running across the lush green grass in bright red sneakers, chasing a fluffy golden retriever puppy Dante had purchased for her fourth birthday.
"Uncle Dante! Watch me!" Sophie squealed, climbing the three wooden steps of the playground slide.
Dante sat on the low stone balustrade, dressed in casual gray slacks and a white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows.
The dark tattoos on his forearms were warm in the spring sunshine.
"I'm watching, little star," Dante called back with an easy, radiant smile that his crew hadn't seen in over ten years.
Sophie zipped down the yellow plastic slide with a shriek of delight, tumbling onto the soft wood chips at the bottom.
She scrambled up instantly, brushing the dust from her knees, and raced straight across the grass toward Dante.
She threw her small arms around his knee, looking up with bright, dancing hazel eyes that were the exact mirror of his late sister’s.
"You need a star for today," Sophie declared, pulling a small sheet of gold foil stickers from her overall pocket.
"Another one?" Dante chuckled, lifting her easily onto his knee with one arm. "I already have six in my desk drawer."
"Today is special," Sophie insisted, peeling a gold star from the wax backing with her tongue tucked into the corner of her lip.
"Why is today special?"
"Because Mama said you signed the big papers today," Sophie answered, pressing the gold star right over the breast pocket of his white linen shirt.
Dante looked over at Elena on the garden bench.
Elena looked up from her book, offering him a warm, knowing smile that carried no fear, no debt, and no lies.
Earlier that morning, the Massachusetts probate judge had formally sealed the adoption decree: Sophie was now officially and legally recognized as Sophie Moretti, the primary heir to the entire Moretti family trust.
"There," Sophie announced, patting the gold star flat against his chest with her tiny palm.
"What kind of star is that one?" Dante asked, resting his large chin against the top of her dark curls.
"It's a forever star," Sophie whispered happily, wrapping both arms around his neck.
"It means you never have to be lonely in the dark again."
Dante closed his eyes, burying his face in her warm, sweet-scented hair, feeling the steady beat of her little heart fluttering against his collarbone.
For nine years, he had lived inside a fortress of stone, blood, and paranoia, believing that survival was something you bought with bullets and fear.

He was wrong.
Survival was a three-year-old girl in duck pajamas who had walked through an open door at three in the morning to hand a monster a reason to become a man.
