Chapter 5 - The Bloodline Revealed

The air left Dante’s lungs as if a high-caliber round had ripped through his sternum.

He stepped back until the edge of his mahogany desk caught his hips.

His eyes darted from the silver chain and the brass signet ring in Elena’s palm to the unfolded yellow paper star on the table.

"Julianna had a child?" he whispered, his voice cracking like dry timber.

"She was pregnant when she fled Hanover," Elena explained, wiping her cheeks with the back of her sleeve.

"The father was David Miller, a young timber surveyor from New Hampshire who helped hide us in the woods. They married under false identities, but David was killed in a logging accident before Sophie was even six months old."

"Why didn't she come to me?" Dante roared, slamming his fist onto the desk so hard the crystal bourbon glass jumped and shattered against the floorboards.

"I tore this city apart for five years looking for her! I murdered twelve men connected to that raid! She knew I would have moved heaven and earth to protect her!"

Elena stood up, refusing to back down from his fury.

"She was terrified of you, Dante!" Elena shouted back, her voice shaking with righteous defiance.

"She was terrified of the blood, the guns, the car bombs, and the graveyard you built around your family! She didn't want her baby growing up behind bulletproof glass with bodyguards pointing rifles at the milkman!"

Dante flinched, the words striking deeper than any blade had ever cut him.

He sank slowly into his chair, burying his face in his large, scarred hands.

"When the ovarian cancer came three years ago," Elena continued softly, her voice dropping into a tender, aching sorrow, "Julianna knew she didn't have much time. She made me swear on a crucifix that I would raise Sophie as my own until the girl was old enough to understand."

"Then why did you bring her here?" Dante asked, looking up with red-rimmed, bloodshot eyes.

"Because six months ago, Marcus Vale found us," Elena revealed.

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Dante went completely, terrifyingly still.

"Marcus?"

"A private investigator tracked my pharmacy purchases in Cambridge," Elena said, shivering from the cold memory.

"Marcus cornered me in an alley behind the grocery store. He told me he knew Sophie was Julianna’s legal heir. He said if I didn't take a job in this house and keep my mouth shut, he would sell Sophie’s location to Don Russo to cement their corporate merger."

Dante’s jaw set into iron.

"Marcus was working with the Russos behind my back," Dante said, the final pieces of the twelve-year betrayal snapping into deadly focus.

"Marcus didn't want you to have an heir, Dante," Elena whispered.

"With Julianna dead and no children of your own, Marcus was in line to inherit the family trust if you died without a will. But when Sophie started walking into your study with those stars... Marcus realized his time was running out."

Footsteps moved softly on the parquet floor outside the heavy library door.

Dante didn't move a muscle, but his right hand dropped instantly beneath the leather cushion, finding the checkered grip of his custom Kimber .45 pistol.

The library doorknob turned slowly, silently, from the outside.
