Chapter 9 - The Purge

The silence in the boardroom was absolute, broken only by the hum of the ventilation system. Preston stood frozen, his eyes darting frantically between the recording, Daniel's impassive face, and the horrified expressions of his fellow board members. He reached out to snatch the recorder, but Daniel's hand shot forward like lightning, clamping onto Preston's wrist with an iron grip that forced the venture capitalist down onto his knees with a sharp cry of pain.

""Don't touch the kid's things,"" Daniel said softly, his voice dead calm. He released his grip, stepping back beside his daughter.

Victoria didn't hesitate for a single second. ""Clayton, Preston, your resignations from this board are effective immediately. Federal marshals and agents from the SEC are currently executing search warrants on your private offices on the forty-second floor. If you leave right now, you might make it out the service elevator before the press trucks block the front entrance.""

Clayton didn't say a word. He grabbed his briefcase with trembling hands, turned around, and bolted through the side exit like a frightened dog. Preston glared at Victoria with unbridled hatred, rubbing his bruised wrist.

""You think you won?"" Preston snarled, backing toward the door. ""Without my consortium’s capital, Hale Meridian is vulnerable. You're swimming with sharks, Victoria, and you just threw away your only life raft.""

""My father built this ship, Preston,"" Victoria replied, her voice ringing with absolute, unshakable authority. ""He built it to weather storms, not to harbor pirates. Get out of my building.""

Preston spat on the carpet and stormed out, the heavy doors slamming behind him.

Victoria turned to face the remaining ten board members, who were sitting rigidly in their seats, terrified that they would be implicated in the purge. She pulled out the chair at the head of the table and sat down.

""Here is the new agenda,"" Victoria announced, opening her notebook. ""First: Hale Meridian will immediately restore full, perpetual funding to the Franklin Street Community Center, along with every other charitable lease unlawfully terminated over the last six months. Second: we will establish a forty-million-dollar community oversight endowment, named in honor of Arthur Ellis, dedicated to neighborhood education, youth mentoring, and public health.""

The board members looked at each other, nodding in frantic, unanimous agreement.

""And third,"" Victoria added, looking toward Daniel, who was leaning against the back wall with his arms crossed over his chest. ""We are creating a new senior ombudsman position within our executive committee—someone with full veto authority over foundation resource allocation, someone whose sole responsibility is to ensure that this firm never again sacrifices human lives for abstract numbers. The compensation is two hundred and fifty thousand a year, full medical benefits, and guaranteed five o'clock departures so a certain young lady never has to wait for her dad after school.""

Sophie looked up at Daniel, her eyes round with wonder. ""Dad? Does that mean you don't have to drive in the rain anymore?""

Daniel looked at Victoria. For the first time, he saw no defenses, no cold billionaire persona, and no calculated corporate strategy. He saw a woman who had faced her own failures, broken her pride, and rebuilt her life on solid ground.

""I have one condition, Ms. Hale,"" Daniel said with a faint, crooked smile.

Victoria laughed softly, leaning back in her chair. ""Of course you do, Mr. Brooks. What is it?""

""Sunday afternoons,"" Daniel said. ""Arthur's getting discharged next week. We need a fourth player for the tournament at Franklin Street. And your endgame still needs a lot of work.""

Victoria felt a warmth spreading through her chest that she hadn't felt in years. ""Deal.""
