Chapter 8 - Storming the High Tower

At eleven-fifty-five, the executive boardroom on the sixty-fourth floor of Hale Meridian Tower was buzzing with predatory anticipation. Preston Vale sat at the head of the twenty-seat mahogany conference table, casually adjusting his gold cufflinks while Clayton Mercer distributed copies of the resolution calling for Victoria Hale’s immediate removal as CEO.

""It's open and shut,"" Clayton declared smugly to the assembled directors. ""She humiliated the firm last night at our flagship gala. She gambled our reputation with an hourly delivery worker, abandoned her phone all morning, and has completely lost her psychological fitness to lead. When the clock strikes twelve, we vote.""

The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open with an authoritative crash.

Victoria walked in. She was still wearing her jeans, boots, and beige sweater, her face devoid of makeup, but her presence was so commanding that three directors stood up instinctively. Walking directly behind her was Daniel Brooks, carrying a battered courier satchel, and Sophie, who held a small recording device in her hand like a prized toy.

""Sit down, Clayton,"" Victoria said, her voice slicing through the room like a cold razor.

Preston laughed loudly, leaning back in the leather chair. ""Look what the wind blew in! Victoria, darling, did you bring your fiancé to negotiate your severance package? You're five minutes away from being stripped of your voting rights. Bringing street vagrants into a fiduciary proceeding is grounds for immediate security removal.""

""Call security, Preston,"" Victoria said calmly, walking to the foot of the table. ""In fact, call the Department of Justice while you're at it. They're already downstairs in the lobby.""

Preston’s smirk flickered. ""What nonsense are you talking about?""

Daniel stepped forward, unzipping the satchel and slamming a thick binder onto the glass table. ""These are the certified delivery logs from Vale Holdings over the last ninety days. Combined with the digital forensic trails from our dispatch servers, they show direct, encrypted communication between Clayton Mercer's personal accounts and four shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands.""

Victoria leaned forward, resting both hands flat on the mahogany wood. ""You manipulated our internal compliance software to artificially default on seven prime real estate leases held by my father's foundation. You planned to vote out the CEO, declare the properties toxic assets, sell them to your offshore entities for twelve million dollars, and flip them to commercial developers next spring for two hundred and forty million.""

The board members gasped, several immediately dropping their pens and backing away from Preston as if he had caught fire. Clayton Mercer turned the color of chalk, frantically fumbling with his spectacles.

""This is unverified slander!"" Preston yelled, jumping to his feet, his veins bulging against his collar. ""You're taking the word of a minimum-wage delivery boy over your managing partners?""

May you like

""He's not just a delivery boy,"" Sophie's clear, high voice rang out across the silent boardroom. She pressed the play button on her small recorder.

Preston’s own voice echoed sharply out of the speaker: “Make sure the Franklin Street audit is buried under the pile. If Arthur Ellis signs that renewal before the stroke finishes him, the whole zoning play falls apart. Once Victoria cuts the lease, we own the block.”
