Chapter 8 - The Trap at Pier 44

The clock on the dashboard of Damian’s matte-black sedan clicked silently to 11:45 PM as he pulled up to the abandoned, snow-dusted expanse of Pier 44 in the Chicago industrial harbor. The freezing wind howling off Lake Michigan whipped spray against the rusted corrugated metal warehouses, creating an eerie, apocalyptic soundtrack.
Damian sat in the driver's seat for a long moment, his eyes fixed on the rearview mirror. Back at the mansion, he had left Evelyn sleeping peacefully under heavy guard, believing he was merely attending a late-night corporate emergency. He had promised her he would always be there, and walking into a suspected ambush felt like breaking that vow. But it was the only way to ensure that Viktor Vance and his thugs would never, ever pose a threat to his child again.
He stepped out of the car into the biting cold, wearing a heavy black wool coat, his expression carved from stone. He carried no visible weapons, but beneath his coat, his holster was loaded and ready.
As he walked down the long, creaking wooden pier toward Warehouse 7, the heavy metal sliding doors groaned open, spilling a harsh beam of yellow halogen light across the snow.
Viktor Vance stepped out of the shadows, flanked by six armed mercenaries holding automatic rifles. Viktor was a tall, scarred man with cold, dead eyes—a relic of the old syndicate days who despised Damian’s attempts to legitimize the family empire.
"Well, well, well," Viktor mocked, spreading his arms wide as the wind whipped his leather jacket. "The great Damian Cross. Walking right into the lion's den alone like a good little husband. I must admit, I didn't think a man wrapped around a woman's finger would have the balls to show up."
Damian stopped twenty feet away, his hands shoved casually into his coat pockets, completely unfazed by the six barrels pointed at his chest. "You made a mistake bringing my wife into this, Viktor."
"Oh, did I?" Viktor sneered, pulling a silver flash drive from his pocket—the digital master key containing all the hidden offshore ledgers. "You spent six months trying to bury your past, Damian, while building a nice, cozy domestic life with your little Indiana bride. But you can't outrun blood and sin. You sign over full operational control of the harbor tonight, or my men pay a very messy visit to your Gold Coast mansion before sunrise."
Viktor laughed, stepping closer. "Imagine what a home invasion would do to a pregnant woman. So fragile, so—"
BANG.
Before Viktor could finish his sentence, a single, deafening gunshot echoed across the harbor. But it didn't come from Damian.
High up on the rusted gantry crane overlooking the pier, the red laser dot of a sniper rifle suddenly danced across Viktor’s chest, followed immediately by three more lasers painting the chests of his mercenaries.
Viktor froze, his smug smile vanishing instantly. "What is this?"
From the shadows behind the shipping containers, twenty of Damian’s most elite, heavily armed security operatives stepped out, cutting off every possible exit route. At the head of the tactical unit walked Marcus, lowering a smoking assault rifle.

Damian slowly pulled his hands out of his pockets, a terrifying, cold smile touching the corners of his mouth.
"Did you really think," Damian said, his voice cutting through the wind like a razor blade, "that I would leave my family unprotected while walking into a trap set by a dead man?"
