Chapter 10 - The Dawn of Forever

The golden morning sun poured through the towering arched windows of the Gold Coast mansion, casting warm, dancing reflections across the polished hardwood floors of the library.

Evelyn sat comfortably on the velvet sofa, wrapped in a plush cashmere blanket, sipping a cup of chamomile tea. The heavy mahogany doors were wide open, welcoming the light of a brand-new day. On the coffee table in front of her sat a single, pristine piece of paper—not the cold, intimidating divorce papers from a week ago, but a brand-new set of architectural blueprints for a nursery that Damian had already begun designing himself.

Heavy, steady footsteps echoed down the grand staircase.

Damian walked into the room, dressed casually in a charcoal sweater and dark jeans, looking more relaxed and at peace than Evelyn had ever seen him. The heavy, hunted look in his dark eyes was entirely gone, replaced by a quiet, unshakable warmth.

He walked straight over to the sofa, dropped down gracefully onto one knee in front of her, and gently placed both hands flat against her stomach.

Evelyn smiled softly, resting her fingers over his. "You look tired."

"I had a busy night," Damian murmured, pressing a tender, lingering kiss to the back of her hand before looking up into her eyes. "Viktor Vance and his crew are gone, Evelyn. Permanently. The federal authorities took custody of their assets an hour ago. There is no one left who can ever touch us, threaten us, or make you doubt my place by your side."

Evelyn’s eyes welled with tears of profound relief. She leaned forward, cup forgotten, and cupped his rugged jaw with her hand. "You did all of that... just to keep us safe?"

"I would burn the entire city to the ground before I let anyone hurt you or our child," Damian whispered fiercely, his voice vibrating with absolute truth. "I spent years believing that keeping you at arm's length was how I protected you. I was an idiot. You are my home, Evelyn. The only home I've ever had."

Evelyn let out a watery laugh, leaning down to press her forehead against his. "Good. Because I wasn't actually going to let you divorce me anyway."

Damian let out a deep, resonant chuckle—a rich, joyful sound that echoed through the grand mansion, banishing every last ghost of the past. He pulled her gently into his arms, burying his face in her neck as she wrapped her arms tightly around his shoulders, holding on with a fierce, unbreakable love.

Outside, the Chicago snow melted under the brilliant morning light, signaling the end of the long winter and the beautiful, radiant beginning of forever.
