Chapter 4 - The Mask Slips

Celeste stood in the doorway, a masterpiece of aristocratic malice. Her sharp, powdered face beamed with an unsettling satisfaction as she looked from Damian standing rigidly by the table to Evelyn standing defensively beside Helen. She had orchestrated this chess move meticulously, believing she held every card in the deck. For years, Celeste had resented Evelyn for slipping past Damian’s iron defenses, fearing that a genuine heir would dilute her own grip on the Cross family fortune and legacy.

"Celeste," Helen hissed, stepping forward like a tigress defending her cub. "Get out of this house. This instant."

"Oh, Helen, please," Celeste laughed, a light, melodic sound that chilled the air. She stepped further into the library, her diamond rings flashing under the chandelier. She turned her gaze to Damian, assuming her usual role of the wise, protective elder. "Someone had to be the adult in the room, Damian. You’ve been drowning yourself in corporate warfare for months, dragging this broken marriage along like a corpse. I merely helped sweet Evelyn see the writing on the wall. She doesn’t belong in our world. And this unexpected... medical complication? Well, let’s be honest, it changes nothing about your need for a clean break."

Damian didn't move. He didn't yell. He didn't draw the weapon he carried beneath his jacket.

Instead, a terrifying, unnatural calm washed over him. The air in the room seemed to drop ten degrees. When Damian Cross went quiet like that, men in the Chicago underworld started writing their wills.

"A medical complication," Damian repeated softly, his voice barely above a whisper.

Celeste blinked, momentarily thrown off by his lack of explosive anger. She smiled patronizingly. "Darling, let's not pretend you want a baby tied around your neck right now. With the federal investigations into the shipping ports and your rivals circling like wolves, an unplanned infant from a girl who faints at charity auctions is a liability. I’ve already spoken to a specialist downtown who can—"

CRASH.

Before Celeste could finish her sentence, Damian snatched a heavy crystal decanter from the mahogany bar cart and hurled it against the brick fireplace inches from where she stood. The glass exploded into a thousand glittering shards, sending a shockwave through the room. Celeste shrieked, stumbling back against the bookshelf, her face draining of all color.

"If you ever," Damian whispered, closing the distance between them with terrifying speed, "speak of my wife, or my child, as a medical complication again, I will personally strip you of every cent, every title, and every property bearing the Cross name before the sun rises."

Celeste stared up at him, her chest heaving, the mask of sophisticated cruelty completely shattered. "Damian... I was only trying to protect—"

"You were protecting your own grip on a dynasty that was never yours to control," Damian snarled, his face inches from hers. His eyes were completely devoid of human warmth, burning with a dark, predatory fury. "You thought you could break my wife behind my back while I was too blind and arrogant to notice. You miscalculated, Celeste. Pack your bags. If you are still in this zip code by dawn, I won't just ruin you financially. I will make you disappear."

Trembling violently, Celeste clutched her handbag, shot one venomous glare at Evelyn, and fled the library, her expensive heels clicking frantically against the marble floor until the front door slammed shut behind her.

The room plunged back into a heavy, suffocating silence.

Damian slowly turned around to face Evelyn. He expected her to look relieved, or perhaps vindicated. Instead, Evelyn was staring at him with a look of profound, chilling realization. The way he had just dismantled Celeste—cold, calculated, and terrifyingly absolute—reminded Evelyn of the dark underworld her husband ruled every single day.

"You see?" Evelyn whispered, her voice trembling as she took another step back toward the French doors leading to the garden patio. "This is why I didn't tell you."

Damian’s heart stopped. "Evelyn..."

May you like

"You are a dangerous man, Damian," she said, tears finally spilling freely down her cheeks. "You solve every problem with intimidation, isolation, and controlled violence. I didn't want my child raised in a warzone. And I refuse to be kept in a gilded cage guarded by a monster who thinks silence is a virtue."

Before Damian could process her words, Evelyn turned, threw open the French doors, and ran out into the freezing Chicago night.
