Chapter 9 - Honey & Rye’s New Era

Forty-eight hours after the dramatic helicopter exit, Mara’s sleek black sedan pulled up directly in front of Honey & Rye, the tiny bakery near the edge of town where it all began. The ancient sign above the door still creaked slightly in the breeze, smelling eternally of cinnamon, coffee, and old machinery.
Inside, Rebecca Bennett was wiping down the glass display case just as she had done six mornings a week for the past twenty years. The bell above the door chimed, and she looked up, expecting a regular neighborhood customer.
Instead, her daughter walked in, carrying a large, heavy manila folder under her arm.
“You’re back early from Chicago,” Rebecca said, wiping her hands on her apron with a warm, knowing smile. “Did you survive the high school reunion crowd?”
Mara grinned, dropping her keys onto the counter. “Oh, I survived. In fact, I think they’re still trying to pick up their champagne flutes.”
Rebecca laughed, shaking her head. “You didn't cause trouble, did you?”
“Just a little corporate restructuring,” Mara winked, sliding the manila folder across the counter.
Rebecca opened it, her eyes widening as she read the legal documents inside. It was a complete architectural and financial blueprint for a brand-new, state-of-the-art commercial baking facility on the north side of town—fully funded, fully automated, and bearing the name Bennett Global Culinary. Attached to it was a notice of full debt cancellation for the original Honey & Rye building.

“Mara… what is this?” Rebecca whispered, her voice trembling as tears welled up in her eyes.
“This is retirement, Mom,” Mara said softly, stepping around the counter to wrap her arms tightly around her mother. “You’re never going to worry about a broken refrigeration compressor ever again.”
