Chapter 4 - The Accidental Group Chat

Ten years passed in a blur of late-night coding, university coffee runs, venture capital pitches, and relentless execution. ColdGuard evolved from a nine-dollar kitchen-timer hack into an enterprise-grade IoT platform monitoring thousands of commercial kitchens, hospitals, and pharmaceutical supply chains across North America. Mara went from wearing taped shoes to ringing the opening bell of a major stock exchange before her twenty-eighth birthday.

Meanwhile, Cedar Ridge High’s golden class of 2016 had settled into comfortable, predictable trajectories. Selena was doing boutique PR in Cincinnati, clinging desperately to the coattails of regional influencers. Derek owned three fitness centers, which he mentioned in every single breath. They were peaks of high school society who had peaked too early, slowly turning sour as the real world refused to hand them trophies just for showing up.

Then came the slip-up.

Three weeks before the ten-year reunion, someone updating an old athletic booster spreadsheet accidentally added Mara’s personal mobile number to a private WhatsApp group chat titled Cedar Ridge 2016 - VIP Only.

Mara had watched silently as her phone buzzed on the mahogany desk of her Columbus headquarters.

Does anyone still know where Mara Bennett ended up? Selena had typed.

Probably managing her mom’s bakery, Derek replied instantly.

She always said she was going to invent something, another voice chimed in.

Then came the message that sealed their fate. Selena wrote: Invite her. Ten years is a long time to wait for a punch line.

They thought they were setting up a victim for public execution. They had no idea they were walking right into an ambush. Mara looked at the screen, picked up her phone, called her mother for a quick laugh, and then dialed her corporate aviation coordinator. If they wanted a show, she was going to give them a blockbuster.
