Chapter 7 - The Tables Turn

The atmosphere beneath the white canopy had shifted from smug mockery to crushing humiliation. The former football stars and prom queens who had spent the last hour laughing at Mara were now standing in stunned silence, realizing that their entire financial stability, local standing, and petty social hierarchy meant nothing to the woman standing before them.
“You... you came here just to gloat?” Selena stammered, her voice losing all its polished PR sheen, cracking with naked insecurity. “You came all this way just to humiliate us?”
Mara stopped walking and turned to face Selena directly. The afternoon sun framed her sharp silhouette against the backdrop of the rusted stadium bleachers where they had spent their youth ignoring her.
“Humiliate you, Selena? I didn't have to lift a finger,” Mara said quietly. “You invited me here because you wanted a victim. You wanted someone to look down on so you could feel seventeen again for one afternoon. That’s pathetic.”
Jasmine Cole stepped out from the group, her face beaming with quiet pride. She walked right up to Mara and held out her hand. “I’m proud of you, Mara. I always knew you’d do incredible things.”
Mara took Jasmine’s hand, shaking it warmly. “Thanks, Jasmine. You were the only one who didn't join in the dirt. I haven't forgotten that.”
Then Mara turned her attention back to the wider crowd. Dozens of former classmates—the kids who had sat in the back, the ones who had worked part-time jobs while others partied, the ones who had been invisible—were watching with expressions of absolute awe.

“Listen to me,” Mara said, her voice ringing out across the football field. “Cedar Ridge gave some of you a crown for four years. But the real world doesn’t care about high school prom courts. It cares about what you build when everyone else goes home.”
She turned back toward the helicopter, whose rotor blades were beginning to spool up again for her departure. The reunion was officially over.
