Chapter 9 - Breaking the Chains

The forty-eight hours officially ticked away into history, but nobody mentioned the timer anymore. The heavy brass keys that Mrs. Hess had handed me sat forgotten on the kitchen counter, next to an empty skillet and a stack of clean plates. For the first time in two years, the suffocating knot of anxiety that had permanently lodged itself in my chest simply dissolved, leaving behind a strange, unfamiliar lightness.
Later that afternoon, the heavy iron front gates of Falcone Manor opened wide to admit a sleek black medical transport van. When the driver carefully helped Lily out of her wheelchair and onto the paved stone walkway, my sister looked around at the towering Gothic architecture, the sprawling Atlantic ocean views, and the manicured gardens with wide, astonished eyes.
“Maeve... where are we?” Lily whispered, clutching my hand tightly as she took in the breathtaking scale of the estate. “Is this a hotel? How did we afford this?”
Before I could answer, the front double doors swung open, and Roman, Declan, and Gabriel stepped out onto the grand stone porch. They weren't wearing their cold, intimidating mafia masks. Instead, Roman wore a soft, approachable smile that mirrored the expression in our mother’s old photographs, while Declan carried a plush velvet throw blanket and Gabriel held a tray of fresh lemonade.
“Welcome home, Lily,” Roman said warmly, stepping down the stairs to meet us with open arms. “Your big sister put up quite a fight to get you here, but we wouldn't have it any other way.”
Lily looked up at me in utter bewilderment, and I just smiled, wiping a stray tear of pure relief from my cheek.

For the next week, Falcone Manor underwent a radical transformation. The gloomy, intimidating halls were filled with the sound of laughter, music, and the smell of home-cooked meals. The three ruthless mafia brothers, once feared across the entire eastern seaboard as cold-blooded executioners, turned out to be fiercely protective, slightly overbearing older brothers who competed fiercely over who got to push Lily’s wheelchair in the garden or help her with her physical therapy exercises.
The local rumors about the haunted, terrifying estate quickly died down, replaced by bewildered whispers from the neighbors who couldn't quite figure out why the terrifying Falcone syndicate had suddenly adopted a broke, stubborn twenty-four-year-old girl and her little sister. But we didn't care about the gossip. We had finally found safety, family, and a love strong enough to conquer any fortress.
