Chapter 3 - The Price of a Secret

If the first encounter was meant to scare me away, the following thirty-six hours were a calculated psychological campaign designed to break my spirit completely. The Falcone brothers didn't just live in a mansion; they ruled an empire of fear, and they expected everyone around them to tremble. But they had severely miscalculated my threshold for misery. After dealing with eviction notices, predatory debt collectors, and hospital administrators who looked at human life as a ledger entry, three arrogant men in expensive suits felt more like annoying workplace hazards than existential threats.

The tests came fast and relentless. That evening, while I was polishing the silver in the formal dining room, Declan casually strolled past and hurled a heavy crystal whiskey glass against the wall right beside my head. The glass shattered into a thousand glittering shards, missing my temple by mere inches. The sound echoed like a gunshot through the empty room. He stood in the doorway, arms crossed, waiting for me to scream, to cower, or to run out of the room crying.

I didn't even drop my polishing cloth. I carefully picked up the largest shard of crystal, placed it in the dustpan, and looked him dead in the eye.

“That’s fine crystal, Mr. Falcone,” I said evenly. “And since it was malicious property damage during my working hours, you owe me ten extra minutes on my timesheet. I charge overtime.”

Declan stared at me for three long seconds, his jaw clenching tightly, before he let out a short, sharp bark of laughter and walked away, shaking his head.

The real trap, however, was sprung by Gabriel.

Later that night, while cleaning the expansive mahogany library, I discovered that my personal background file—complete with my tax history, my sister’s medical records, and the exact balance of my crippling debt—was sitting wide open on the center reading table. Gabriel stepped out from behind a towering bookshelf, leaning casually against the polished wood with that same lazy, chilling smile plastered across his face.

“Twelve thousand dollars overdue at St. Jude’s Medical Center,” Gabriel murmured, his voice smooth like silk dipped in venom. “You can scrub these floors for the next fifty years, Maeve, and you will never even scratch the surface of that mountain. Why fight it? We own this town. We could wipe that debt before breakfast if you just learn to be a little more... accommodating.”

My heart slammed violently against my ribs, and for a fleeting second, the sheer hopelessness of my situation threatened to crush me. The thought of Lily suffering because of my stubborn pride was a physical ache in my chest. But looking at Gabriel’s smug, predatory grin, a fierce surge of protective anger flared up inside me. I refused to let them buy my dignity.

I straightened my spine, forced my voice to remain perfectly level, and looked him straight in the eye.

“Well, since you’ve been doing such thorough background checks on my finances, Mr. Falcone, you should probably know that my phone bill is also due on Tuesday,” I replied coldly. “Feel free to pay that one too while you’re browsing my private life.”

Gabriel’s smile faltered, replaced for a split second by genuine, unadulterated shock. He hadn't expected defiance; he had expected a broken girl ready to sell her soul for a medical receipt. Before he could formulate a response, I picked up my duster and walked out of the library with my head held high, leaving the master manipulator standing alone in the dark.
