Chapter 8 - Sins of the Calder Dynasty

The Calder estate sat atop the highest bluff overlooking the river, surrounded by thirty acres of ancient oaks, wrought-iron security gates, and sweeping stone terraces. By the time Nicholas returned, dawn was breaking over the horizon, painting the overcast sky in delicate streaks of rose gold and lavender.
Nicholas walked quietly through the marble foyer, removing his wet coat and handing it to the waiting butler with a soft murmur of thanks. He walked past the grand dining room where his ancestors had entertained governors and foreign dignitaries, past the portrait gallery where generations of stone-faced Calder men stared down from oil canvases. None of those men had ever known true happiness; they had died clutching bank ledgers and land patents, paranoid of their own children and bitter in their grand, empty halls.
Nicholas walked up the sweeping grand staircase and pushed open the heavy oak doors of the master bedchamber.
A fire was still crackling quietly in the stone hearth, casting a warm, golden glow across the room. Evelyn was sitting curled up on the oversized window seat, wearing a soft cream cashmere sweater that draped loosely over her shoulders. Her injured right wrist was freshly bandaged and resting comfortably on a silk pillow in her lap, while her left hand held a steaming mug of chamomile tea. She was looking out at the morning mist rolling across the gardens below.
As the door clicked shut, Evelyn turned her head. Her face lit up with a soft, radiant smile that instantly melted the bone-deep exhaustion from Nicholas’s chest.
""You're back,"" she whispered, setting her mug down on the low wooden table.
Nicholas crossed the room in long, silent strides. He didn't say a word; he simply knelt down on the rug beside the window seat, buried his face into the soft wool of her sweater against her lap, and let out a long, ragged breath that he felt like he had been holding for eighteen months.
Evelyn smiled tenderly, reaching down with her uninjured hand to gently comb her fingers through his dark, rain-dampened hair. She felt the tension gradually leaving his powerful shoulders, feeling the terrifying king of the city surrender completely to the warmth of her presence.
""Did you take care of everything?"" she asked softly.
""They are gone, Evelyn,"" Nicholas murmured against her lap, his voice muffled by the cashmere. ""Marjorie. Julian. The Morettis. No one will ever dare walk into your room and tell you that you don't belong here. No one will ever touch you again.""
Evelyn cupped his jaw, gently lifting his face so she could look into his dark, brooding eyes. She saw the lingering shadows of violence there, the burden of a man who spent his life standing between the wolves and the people he loved. ""Nicholas, you didn't have to ruin them for me.""
""I didn't ruin them for you,"" he said, rising up onto his knees so that his face was level with hers. He reached out and gently traced the delicate line of her cheekbone with the back of his thumb. ""They ruined themselves the moment they decided that cruelty was an acceptable currency in this house. You spent weeks nursing those white roses back to life just to make my sister happy. You bleed for people who don't deserve you, Evelyn. The least I can do is make sure the monsters pay for the blood you lose.""
""I don't need you to be a monster, Nicholas,"" she said softly, leaning her forehead against his. ""I just need you to be my husband.""
""I am both,"" he replied, his voice thick with emotion. ""To the world outside these gates, I am whatever nightmare they need me to be to keep them away from you. But here... in this room... I am only yours.""
Nicholas reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a folded leather document bearing the official state seal and the golden stamp of the land registry office. He placed it gently into her uninjured hand.
Evelyn looked down at the parchment, her eyes widening as she read the legal description: THE NORTHERN RIVERFRONT PARCELS, FORMERLY OF THE VANCE ESTATE, CONVEYED IN FULL TO EVELYN CALDER.
""Nicholas... this is your mother's land,"" she gasped, looking up at him with disbelieving eyes. ""The deep-water frontage... this is worth tens of millions of dollars! Why would you give this to me?""
""Because my mother would have loved you,"" Nicholas said, his eyes glistening with rare, honest moisture. ""My mother spent her entire life surrounded by the Calder men. They bought her jewels, they built her palaces, but none of them ever asked her what she dreamed of. She dreamed of building a sanctuary along the river—a place where the children of the workers could see flowers bloom without paying an admission fee.""

He took Evelyn’s bandaged hand, raising it to his lips to press a tender, reverent kiss against the white cotton wrapping. ""My mother never got to build her garden, Evelyn. But you can. That land belongs to you now. Build your greenhouses. Build your school. Make that riverfront into something this city has never seen: a place born out of love instead of greed.""
Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears, but this time they were tears of profound, overwhelming joy. She threw her arms around Nicholas’s neck, burying her face into his throat as he wrapped his powerful arms securely around her waist, holding her as though she were the only real thing in a world made of smoke and shadows."
