Chapter 4 - The Vanished Inheritance

With the ballroom cleared of Marjorie's toxic presence, the wedding of Rachel Calder became the spectacle it was always meant to be. The scent of white garden roses filled the vaulted sanctuary as Rachel walked down the aisle on Nicholas’s arm, her eyes shining with tears of gratitude. When Nicholas handed his sister over to her groom—a quiet, respectable architect who genuinely adored her—he turned back and walked straight to where Evelyn was seated: in the absolute center of the front pew, wearing Nicholas’s heavy wool overcoat draped across her bare shoulders to keep her warm.

Throughout the vows, Nicholas held Evelyn’s uninjured left hand in his lap, his thumb rhythmically rubbing the soft skin of her knuckles. It was a silent, unbreakable vow of his own.

By midnight, the wedding reception was winding down. The guests had danced beneath the chandeliers, thoroughly dazzled by the rose-filled arches and the boundless Calder wealth, yet everyone spoke in hushed tones about the ruthless efficiency with which Nicholas had dismantled his aunt and cousin. As the last limousines pulled away from the grand portico in the driving autumn rain, Nicholas led Evelyn through the private service corridors of the estate toward his private executive suite.

Grant Hale was already waiting inside the wood-paneled library. He had removed his dinner jacket, revealing the shoulder holster beneath his crisp white shirt. On the massive mahogany desk sat an open steel briefcase filled with ledger sheets, foreign bank routing documents, and several encrypted thumb drives.

""Sit, Evelyn,"" Nicholas said gently, leading her to the plush leather armchair beside the roaring fireplace. He carefully unbuttoned his cuffs and knelt down before her, lifting her bandaged wrist to inspect it again. ""Does it throb?""

""A little,"" she admitted, leaning her head back against the dark leather. ""The doctor at the clinic gave me pain medication, but I didn't want to take it before the reception. I needed to stay clear-headed.""

""You shouldn't have had to fight them at all,"" Nicholas said, his eyes darkening with self-reproach. ""I placed you in that house thinking the Calder name was an impenetrable wall. I forgot that the sharpest knives are always held by the people who share your dining room table.""

""Nicholas, look at what Grant found,"" Evelyn murmured, nodding toward the desk. She knew her husband better than anyone; if he dwelled too long on his guilt, the retribution he unleashed upon the world would be catastrophic.

Nicholas rose to his feet and turned to his head of security. ""Report, Grant.""

""It's worse than we thought, sir,"" Grant said, tapping a thick sheaf of printed bank transfers. ""Julian wasn't just throwing his weight around in the conservatory. He was looking for something. We pulled the security footage from the private residential wing that was recorded three hours before the wedding.""

Grant tapped a button on his tablet, and a black-and-white surveillance video began playing on the wall monitor. The screen showed Julian Calder sneaking into Nicholas’s private home study through the French doors leading to the balcony. He was wearing leather gloves, carrying a lock-picking kit, and moving straight toward the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves where Elizabeth Calder’s personal journal collection was stored.

""He wasn't after cash or corporate bonds,"" Grant explained. ""He was searching for the original land deeds to the Old Mill district along the northern riverfront. The property your mother bought under her maiden name thirty years ago.""

Nicholas narrowed his eyes. ""That land is legally protected under a private trust. It was deeded to Rachel and me upon our mother's death.""

""Not according to the forged documentation Marjorie had drawn up last week,"" Grant said grimly. ""Julian has accumulated nearly four million dollars in gambling debts to the Moretti family across the river. The Morettis gave him until Sunday midnight to pay up, or they promised to put him in a concrete barrel at the bottom of the channel. Marjorie planned to force Evelyn out of the family circle today, claim Evelyn was mentally unstable and stealing Calder heirlooms, and use the ensuing chaos to file an emergency guardianship petition to liquidate your mother’s northern riverfront parcels.""

Evelyn gasped, sitting forward in her chair. ""That's why he was so furious when he saw me in the conservatory! I came in early with the fresh rose delivery, and I caught Julian coming out of the study with a crowbar in his backpack. When I asked him what he was doing near Nicholas’s private office, he panicked. He grabbed my arm, threw me against the rose trellis, and told me that if I said a single word to you, he would make sure I woke up in the river.""

Nicholas’s entire body went rigid. The air in the library seemed to drop below freezing. ""He threatened your life.""

""He was desperate, Nicholas,"" Evelyn said softly, reaching out to touch his sleeve. ""He knew you would destroy him if you found out about the Moretti debt.""

""He doesn't know what destruction means yet,"" Nicholas said, his voice terrifyingly calm. He looked at Grant. ""Where are Marjorie and Julian right now?""

""They retreated to Marjorie’s penthouse in the uptown district,"" Grant replied. ""Our men are monitoring the building perimeter. However, ten minutes ago, an armored Mercedes with tinted windows and blacked-out plates pulled into the underground parking garage of her building.""

Nicholas's eyes flashed with lethal understanding. ""The Morettis.""

""Yes, sir,"" Grant nodded. ""Vincent Moretti sent his top enforcer, Marco Ramos. It appears they are not waiting until Sunday midnight. They know Julian has lost his standing in the Calder Corporation, and they have come to collect whatever blood is left in his veins.""

Nicholas reached into the desk drawer and pulled out a heavy, matte-black handgun, checking the magazine with a smooth, practiced click. ""Get the cars ready, Grant.""

Evelyn stood up from the armchair, her heart pounding against her ribs. ""Nicholas, wait! You can't go there! The police, the federal investigators—they're watching you after the scene at the ballroom!""

Nicholas paused, turning back to look at his wife. He walked over to her, cupped her delicate face in his broad hands, and pressed a lingering, tender kiss to her forehead. ""Evelyn, my family tried to erase you tonight. They tried to break your spirit and they bruised your body. I will not allow the scavengers of this city to finish what my treacherous aunt started. Julian may be a dog, but he is a Calder dog. And no one executes a Calder except me.""
