Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Rain

The rain over the city had turned into a relentless downpour by two in the morning. Sheets of cold water lashed against the high-rise windows of Marjorie Calder’s luxury penthouse, blurring the neon glow of the skyline below. Inside the sprawling apartment, however, there was no luxury left—only raw, unadulterated terror.

Julian Calder was curled on the imported Persian rug, holding his fractured ribs and sobbing uncontrollably. Standing over him was Marco Ramos, a hulking enforcer for the Moretti syndicate whose knuckles were heavily scarred from years of street-level enforcement. Two other armed men in leather jackets stood near the shattered glass of the balcony door, their automatic pistols drawn and resting casually at their sides.

Marjorie was backed against the marble fireplace, her designer evening gown torn at the shoulder, clutching a silver candelabra like a pathetic weapon. ""I told you, the money is coming! My son is the nephew of Nicholas Calder! Nicholas controls hundreds of millions! He will pay you!""

Marco chuckled, a dry, rasping sound that rattled in his throat. He casually kicked Julian in the side, eliciting a pathetic howl of agony from the young man. ""Lady, word travels fast in this town. My boss received a phone call from the country club forty minutes ago. Your nephew threw you out into the street like garbage. He stripped Julian of his titles, his trust fund, and his security access. You don't have Nicholas Calder's money. You don't even have taxi fare.""

""No, that was just a family dispute!"" Marjorie screamed, tears ruining her heavy mascara. ""Nicholas was just showing off for his shop-girl wife! Tomorrow morning he will calm down! He won't let his own flesh and blood be murdered over four million dollars!""

""Nicholas Calder doesn't calm down,"" Marco sneered, drawing a heavy chrome revolver from inside his leather coat and pulling back the hammer with a sharp, sickening click. ""And he certainly doesn't pay debts for cousins who steal from him. Your boy promised us the northern riverfront deeds by midnight tonight. He doesn't have them. Which means his life is officially forfeit.""

Marco leveled the barrel directly at Julian’s forehead. Julian squeezed his eyes shut, his entire body shaking as he wet himself on the rug. ""Mom! Do something! Please!""

Suddenly, the heavy double oak doors of the penthouse didn't just open—they exploded inward with a deafening crack of splintered timber.

Before the two Moretti guards near the balcony could even raise their weapons, two muffled gunshots echoed through the room. The guards collapsed instantly to the floor, disarmed by pinpoint rounds that shattered their wrists and sent their pistols skittering across the hardwood floor.

Through the drifting smoke and pouring rain from the hallway stepped Nicholas Calder.

He wore his long black wool coat, open at the front, his hands resting casually inside his pockets. Behind him stood Grant Hale and four Calder security operatives, their tactical rifles raised and trained on every corner of the room with lethal military precision.

Marco Ramos froze, his revolver still pointed at Julian, but his eyes wide with sudden panic. ""Calder... what the hell is this? This is Moretti business! The kid owes us four million on legitimate marker sheets!""

Nicholas walked slowly into the center of the room, his wet boots leaving dark prints on the pale carpet. He looked down at Julian, who was curled in a fetal ball at Marco’s feet, then up at Marco. ""In this city, Ramos, there is no business that is not Calder business.""

""You threw him out!"" Marjorie shrieked from the corner, half-insane with relief and terror. ""Nicholas, you came to save us! I knew you wouldn't abandon your family!""

Nicholas didn't even look at her. His gaze remained locked on Marco Ramos. ""Lower the weapon, Marco. You have three seconds before Grant puts a round through your throat.""

Marco’s hand trembled. He knew the reputation of Nicholas Calder. Nicholas didn't make empty threats; he had buried entire crews that dared challenge his authority over the river docks. Slowly, carefully, Marco eased the hammer back down and lowered the revolver, tossing it onto the sofa. ""Look, Calder, we don't want a war with your organization. But Vincent Moretti won't let four million walk out the door. Julian signed the promissory notes.""

Nicholas reached into his interior coat pocket and pulled out a thick, sealed manila envelope. He tossed it onto the glass coffee table, where it landed with a heavy, solid thud. ""In that envelope are certified cashier's checks for four million two hundred thousand dollars. The extra two hundred thousand is for your boss to forget Julian Calder ever existed.""

Marco’s eyes widened in disbelief. He snatched up the envelope, tore open the seal, and inspected the bank stamps. ""It's all here.""

""Now take your wounded men and get out of this building,"" Nicholas said softly. ""And tell Vincent Moretti that if I ever see a member of his crew north of the river canal again, I will burn his casino to the waterline.""

Marco didn't need to be told twice. He whistled to his two injured guards, who were groaning on the floor, hauled them to their feet, and scrambled out through the shattered doorway into the private elevator bank.

The penthouse fell dead silent once more, save for the patter of rain against the glass.

Marjorie dropped the candelabra, rushing forward with her hands outstretched. ""Oh, Nicholas! My darling nephew! I knew your heart was good! I knew you wouldn't let those animals murder your cousin! Thank God! We will repay you, I swear! Julian will work for you at the docks, he will—""

Nicholas held up a single gloved hand. Marjorie stopped dead in her tracks.

""You misunderstand, Aunt Marjorie,"" Nicholas said, his voice as cold as a tombstone. ""I didn't pay that debt to save Julian's life.""

Julian slowly lifted his bruised face from the floor, blinking through his tears. ""What... what do you mean, Nicholas?""

Nicholas looked down at him with an expression of sheer disgust. ""I paid Vincent Moretti so that your debt would belong entirely to me. The Morettis kill quickly with a bullet to the head. That would have been an act of mercy you do not deserve.""

He turned to Grant Hale. ""Grant, bring in the documents.""

May you like

Grant stepped forward and produced a leather portfolio containing a series of official legal contracts bearing the seal of the state supreme court.

""You thought Evelyn was a defenseless shop girl,"" Nicholas said, his voice slicing through the humid air of the room. ""You thought you could physically assault her, threaten to drown her in the river, and forge deeds to steal my mother's legacy. Now, you will pay for every single bruise upon her skin.""
