Chapter 9 - The Reckoning at Portside

The storm cleared by Friday morning.

The hospital wing of the Voss estate smelled of antiseptic and fresh lilies. Nolan was propped up in bed, his shoulder bound in heavy surgical dressings, an IV line dripping antibiotics into his arm. Despite the doctors ordering complete bed rest, he had a laptop open on his knees, reviewing the morning headlines.

MORETTI SYNDICATE TOPPLED: FEDERAL RAIDS NET DOZENS ACROSS THREE STATES.

VOSS MARITIME SECURES HISTORIC 50-YEAR WATERFRONT LEASE.

PORT AUTHORITY COMMENDS DAVID MILLER’S POSTHUMOUS SERVICE.

The brass key had worked. Marco had retrieved the ledger from Boston at midnight. By dawn, Sal Moretti had been arrested boarding a private jet in Newark, his entire empire dismantled by the evidence David Miller had died to protect.

The door to the room swung open, and I walked in carrying a silver tray with two steaming mugs of black coffee and a plate of warm blueberry muffins.

""The doctor said no work,"" I warned, setting the tray on the side table and firmly snapping his laptop shut.

Nolan looked up, the color returning to his face, that familiar, dangerous spark back in his dark eyes. ""You are remarkably bossy for a fake fiancée.""

""I am currently the only person standing between you and an overdose of hospital food,"" I replied, sitting on the edge of the mattress. ""Show some respect.""

He looked at me for a long, quiet moment. The tension between us had changed. It was no longer the fragile alliance of an alley rescue or the theatrical performance of a press conference. It was deep, heavy, and undeniable.

""Tyler survived surgery,"" Nolan said quietly. ""He will spend the next twenty-five years in federal custody. He will never approach Eli again. And Moretti will die in a cell.""

A massive weight, eighteen months of suffocating fear and grief, finally lifted from my chest. I took a deep, shuddering breath, feeling tears prick my eyes again—not of terror, but of pure relief.

""Thank you,"" I whispered.

""I didn't do it for gratitude, Nora.""

""I know why you did it,"" I said, reaching out to cover his uninjured hand where it rested on the blanket. ""You did it for David. And for your mother.""

Nolan turned his hand over, tangling his long fingers with mine. His grip was warm, strong, and completely secure.

""At first, yes,"" he admitted, his voice dropping into that low, intimate cadence that made my heart race. ""I stepped into that alley to finish David's business. But when I saw you standing in front of that dumpster, bleeding, ready to tear Tyler apart with your bare hands just to keep Eli from seeing the dark... I didn't see an asset. I saw the only woman I have ever met who was braver than I am.""

My breath hitched. ""Nolan...""

""The contract is null and void,"" he said, pulling an envelope from under his pillow and tossing it onto the tray. ""The trust fund is already established in Eli's name. The restaurant deed is cleared. You can pack your bags today, take the boy, and buy a yellow house with a trampoline anywhere in the world. You owe me nothing.""

I stared at the envelope, then slowly brought my eyes back to his scarred, handsome face.

""What if I don't want to leave?"" I asked softly.

May you like

A flicker of genuine surprise crossed his features. ""Nora, my life is violence and politics. Even with Moretti gone, there will always be wolves at the gate.""

""Then let them come,"" I said, leaning closer until our faces were inches apart. ""I’ve spent eighteen months running from wolves, Nolan. I think it’s about time I stayed with the dragon.""
