Chapter 6 - Bloodlines and Broken Safes

The revelation crashed over the ballroom like a physical blow.

Sal Moretti’s hands trembled against the gold head of his cane. The smug, untouchable patriarch suddenly looked seventy years old and cornered. Behind him, Tyler took a panicked step backward into the crowd, realizing the floor was falling out from beneath them.

""You're lying,"" Moretti rasped, though the sudden sweat glistening across his upper lip betrayed him. ""Miller never had the stomach for undercover work. He was a coward!""

""David Miller gave his life to protect his family and clean up the waterfront,"" Nolan countered, his voice cutting through the hushed ballroom. ""He hid the physical ledger in a safety deposit box in Boston. The day he died, he mailed the key to his sister-in-law.""

Nolan turned his dark eyes to me.

My breath caught. The brass key on my keychain. The one I had carried for eighteen months, assuming it opened David’s old tool shed in the backyard. The shed had burned down a week after his funeral, and I had simply kept the key as a sentimental reminder of my sister’s life. It had been in my purse the entire time.

""Nora,"" Nolan said gently, his fingers enclosing mine. ""Do you have the key?""

""Yes,"" I whispered, the realization hitting me with staggering force. ""It’s in my bag at the estate.""

""Then the game is finished,"" Nolan said, turning back to Moretti. ""By dawn, the Department of Justice will have thirty years of your tax evasion, extortion, and murder contracts. You have exactly one hour to leave this city before Marco delivers the files to the United States Attorney.""

Moretti’s chest heaved. He looked around the ballroom, but the politicians and judges who had shared drinks with him ten minutes ago were already turning their backs, melting into the shadows to distance themselves from a dead man walking.

""This isn't over, Voss,"" Moretti snarled, his voice trembling with venom. ""You think you can play family man? You think you can take a waitress and a dead man’s brat and build a dynasty? I will burn this city to the waterline before I let you have the docks!""

Moretti slammed his cane onto the marble floor and stormed toward the double doors, Tyler scrambling frantically behind him like a terrified cur.

Nolan let out a slow, controlled breath. He turned to me, the icy detachment melting from his features, leaving him looking exhausted and fiercely human.

""Are you all right?"" he asked softly.

""You knew,"" I whispered, staring at him in shock. ""You knew David was working for you all along. That's why you came to the alley behind Portside Kitchen.""

""I didn't know about Eli until three days ago,"" Nolan confessed, his hand reaching up to touch the soft hair at my temple. ""When Tyler started talking on the street, I cross-referenced the names. The moment I realized David’s widow had a sister who was raising his boy alone in an alley off Clement Street... I moved. I failed David eighteen months ago, Nora. I arrived too late to save his car from that bridge. I swore to God I wouldn't arrive late for his family.""

The sheer weight of his loyalty took my breath away. He hadn't used us as pawns. He had turned himself into a shield to finish a war his fallen soldier had started.

Suddenly, Nolan’s phone buzzed sharply in his breast pocket. He pulled it out, tapped the screen, and his entire posture shifted back into predator mode.

""Speak,"" Nolan ordered.

Marco’s voice crackled through the speaker, urgent and strained over the sound of heavy gunfire. ""Boss! Perimeter breach at the estate! It’s Moretti’s strike team—they didn't go to the airport, they went straight for the boy!""
