Chapter 1 - The Lie That Signed Our Death Warrants

The air inside the sunlit master bedroom went completely dead. I could hear the slow, rhythmic ticking of a grandfather clock somewhere out in the hall, and the faint rustle of the linen sheets under Eli’s small fingers. My cracked ribs throbbed with every shallow breath, but the physical pain instantly vanished beneath a wave of pure, ice-cold panic.
""Excuse me?"" My voice was barely a rasp. ""What did you just say?""
Nolan Voss didn't flinch. He sat back in the armchair, crossing one long leg over the other. The charcoal cashmere of his sweater looked ridiculously soft against the hard angles of his jaw and that jagged, deliberate scar cutting through his left eyebrow. He looked like an apex predator resting after a meal, entirely comfortable in his skin and fully aware of the terror he inspired.
""Tyler Reed owes forty-two thousand dollars to a syndicate running out of the North Docks,"" Nolan explained, his tone conversational, as if he were discussing a minor stock fluctuation. ""They were preparing to take his fingers. Tyler is not a brave man, Nora. When men like Tyler run out of money, they trade in leverage. Three nights ago, cornered behind a pool hall on Fifth, he told their enforcers that he had access to a high-value asset. Specifically, the hidden, illegitimate son of Nolan Voss.""
I stared at him, my mouth dry. Beside me, Eli had discovered a silver remote control on the nightstand and was quietly trying to figure out which button made the television drop out of the ceiling.
""That's insane,"" I hissed, glancing down at Eli before glaring back at the billionaire crime lord. ""Eli looks nothing like you. His father was my sister’s husband, David. David was an accountant! A mild-mannered man who collected vintage postage stamps and got nervous around fireworks! Tyler is David's second cousin, and Tyler is a lying, violent addict looking for a lifeline!""
""I am aware of David Miller’s pedigree,"" Nolan said calmly. ""And I know Eli is not my biological child. That is entirely irrelevant.""
""How could that possibly be irrelevant?""
""Because in my world, perception is reality."" Nolan leaned forward, resting his forearms on his knees. The dark warmth of his eyes vanished, replaced by an iron resolve that made the room feel ten degrees colder. ""For six years, my rivals have looked for an heir. An Achilles heel. A pressure point to force my hand on the waterfront expansion. Tyler didn't just lie to save his skin; he went to the Moretti family. They bought the story. As far as the most ruthless syndicate on the eastern seaboard is concerned, that seven-year-old boy sitting on your bed is the future of the Voss empire.""
The room tilted. My hand moved instinctively, wrapping around Eli’s skinny shoulder, pulling him back against my chest despite the agonizing flare in my side. Eli looked up, sensing the shift, his big hazel eyes wide and questioning.
""I’m taking him to the police,"" I whispered desperately. ""I’ll get a federal protection order. We’ll leave the state. We’ll change our names.""
""The police on Clement Street answer to Sal Moretti,"" Nolan countered without missing a beat. ""If you walk out of my gates, you will not survive three city blocks. Tyler was sent to Portside Kitchen last night to retrieve the boy for them. If Marco and I hadn't intercepted him, Eli would currently be in a shipping container at Pier 14, waiting to be traded for my signature on a land deed.""
Tears of pure frustration and fury pricked behind my eyelids. ""So what are you saying? You're keeping us hostage?""
""I am keeping you alive,"" Nolan corrected. He stood up, towering over the foot of the bed. He pulled a silver fountain pen from his pocket and set a crisp, folded document onto the duvet. ""Sal Moretti believes the child is mine. If I publicly deny it, they will simply kill the boy to prove a point, discard Tyler, and eliminate you as an inconvenient witness.""
""Then what do you propose?""
Nolan looked down at me, his gaze impenetrable. ""We validate the lie. Tomorrow morning, my legal team announces that I have brought my son home. And to ensure the city’s power brokers accept the legitimacy without asking dangerous questions about paternity, I announce an engagement.""
May you like
I froze. ""An engagement to who?""
""To you, Nora."" Nolan’s jaw tightened. ""You will be my fiancée. Eli will be safe behind thirty-foot concrete walls and armed guards. In exchange, you will play the role of the devoted mother who finally brought the cold-blooded Voss heir to his knees. Refuse, and the front door is unlocked. But you won't make it to the avenue.""
