Chapter 5 - The Courthouse Ambush

The Cook County Chancery Courthouse stood grey and imposing against the misty morning sky, its granite steps slick with autumn rain.
At 8:45 A.M., Giancarlo Moretti strode up the grand steps, surrounded by six armed men in dark overcoats. He was fifty-eight years old, with slicked-back silver hair, cold reptilian eyes, and the tailored arrogance of a man who believed Chicago had already crowned him king.
Walking beside him was his lead corporate litigator, Harrison Cole, clutching a thick red leather dossier stamped with urgent judicial priority seals.
"Is the judge in chambers?" Giancarlo asked in a low rasp, adjusting his cashmere scarf.
"Judge Vance is waiting, Don Giancarlo," Cole replied with a sycophantic grin. "The ex parte motion to appoint Cerberus Holdings as temporary receiver will be signed before ten o'clock. Victor Valente’s flight records from Zurich prove abandonment, and the girl’s apartment has been dark for twenty-four hours."
"Good," Giancarlo sneered, stepping through the brass revolving doors. "The terminals will be ours before the closing bell on Wall Street."
They took the private judicial elevator to the fourth floor, entering Courtroom 404 just as the bailiff was unlocking the heavy oak double doors.
Giancarlo took his seat at the plaintiff’s table, crossing his legs comfortably, tapping his gold signet ring against the mahogany armrest.
The side door to the judicial chambers opened, and Judge Marcus Vance stepped onto the bench, his face stern and unreadable.
"We are here to review the emergency receivership petition for Valente Maritime and River Logistics," Judge Vance announced, adjusting his spectacles. "Mr. Cole, proceed."
Before Harrison Cole could take two steps toward the podium, the heavy double doors at the rear of the courtroom slammed open with a concussive bang that shook the mahogany paneling.
Giancarlo’s six bodyguards reached beneath their suits instinctively, but froze as twelve uniformed Chicago police captains, flanked by armed tactical marshals, took positions along the gallery walls.
Walking down the center aisle, her heels clicking with military precision against the marble floor, was Elena Valente.
She wore an immaculate ivory wool coat tailored to perfection, her dark hair swept up in an elegant French twist, her head held high.
And walking half a step behind her, his hand resting securely on her lower back, was Dante Moretti.
Dante wore a charcoal three-piece suit, his coat unbuttoned just enough to reveal the engraved silver clasp of his holster, his cold amber eyes locked directly onto his uncle.
Giancarlo leaped to his feet, knocking his leather chair backward against the rail.

"What is the meaning of this?" Giancarlo snarled, his voice echoing through the vaulted ceiling. "This is a closed judicial hearing!"
"This is a public matter of corporate governance, Uncle," Dante’s voice resonated like rolling thunder. "And you are attempting to steal property that belongs to my wife."
