Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

The air inside the ballroom turned instantly lethal. The ambient hum of the chandeliers seemed to die out completely, leaving only the sound of Victoria Vance’s ragged, shallow breathing. Lucian stood up from the floor slowly, the grief on his face burning away into an ancient, terrifying fury that had made his family the undisputed kings of the underworld for three generations. He turned toward Victoria, his dark eyes hollowed out into two bottomless pits of pure brimstone. ""You told me she drowned,"" Lucian said, his voice terrifyingly quiet, without an ounce of inflection. ""You stood beside me at her empty mausoleum and handed me a white lily while she was bleeding alone on a highway in Oregon.""
""Lucian, please! Listen to me!"" Victoria shrieked, clawing at the collar of her designer gown as she backed toward the locked service doors. ""She was weak! She was just a spoiled princess who couldn't handle your world! I was the one who stood by you! I helped you build this empire after she vanished! You needed a real partner, not an anchor who kept you sentimental!"" She looked frantically around the room at the capos she had known for five years, but every single man lowered his gaze to the floor. In the Moretti family, betrayal of a bloodline heir was an unforgivable sin punishable by absolute erasure.

""You didn't build my empire,"" Lucian whispered, taking three slow, deliberate strides toward her. ""You built a cage that kept me from my son."" He did not pull a weapon; he simply raised his right hand and snapped his fingers once. The chief of his personal security, an iron-faced veteran named Dominic who had served Lucian’s father, stepped forward and seized Victoria by both arms, pinning her against the marble pillar. ""Hand her over to the federal authorities,"" Lucian commanded coldly. ""Deliver every transaction file our son just uncovered directly to the attorney general's desk. Let her spend the next forty years in a federal penitentiary watching Serena’s corporation liquidate her family’s entire estate penny by penny. Take her out of my sight.""
Victoria was dragged screaming through the service corridor, her frantic pleas echoing down the hall until the heavy fire doors slammed shut, cutting off the sound completely. The grand ballroom was silent once more. The capos retreated toward the perimeter, leaving Lucian standing alone in the center of the vast expanse of marble, his bespoke suit disheveled, looking entirely defeated despite his victory over the traitor. He turned slowly back toward us, his hands hanging limp at his sides. For the first time in his legendary life, the King of New York had no leverage, no threats, and no power left to wield. He was entirely at the mercy of the woman he had failed and the silent child who held his future in his small hands.
