Chapter 5 - The Gala of the Damned

The annual Metropolitan Benefactor Ball at the Plaza Hotel was the crown jewel of Manhattan’s elite society, a grand theater where ruthless billionaires pretended to be philanthropists. For the past five years, Lucian Moretti had attended alone, dressed in a bespoke midnight-black tuxedo, an untouchable shadow that nobody dared cross. Victoria Vance, his perpetual companion who had spent half a decade desperately trying to secure the ring Serena had vacated, stood beside him on the red carpet draped in emeralds. Yet Lucian’s demeanor was chillingly indifferent; he never held her hand, never smiled for the flashing cameras, and kept a heavy crystal glass of neat bourbon permanently fixed in his right grip. He looked like an emperor who had conquered the known world only to discover that every victory tasted like ashes.

The grand ballroom hummed with the high-stakes gossip of the season: Acheron Holdings, the mysterious private entity that had spent the last forty-eight hours executing an aggressive, hostile squeeze on Moretti Maritime, had confirmed that its principal shareholder would be making their first public appearance tonight. The financial press was packed three deep behind the velvet ropes. Lucian stood near the private mezzanine balustrade, surrounded by his personal lieutenants, his jaw set in a hard, predatory line. ""Find out who owns the controlling shares,"" Lucian ordered his underboss in a low, dangerous murmur. ""Offer them twenty percent over market value. If they refuse... make sure their flight back across the river never leaves the runway.""

The massive brass-trimmed double doors of the Grand Ballroom swung open with a resounding thud that cut straight through the string quartet’s performance. The room fell into an immediate, breathless hush. Walking down the grand marble staircase was not an elderly Swiss banker or a cutthroat private equity titan. It was me. I wore a backless, sculpted gown of liquid silver that showed off every inch of my porcelain back, untouched by the five years of hiding. My dark hair was swept up into a severe, elegant chignon, secured by diamonds that Lucian had bought for my twenty-fifth birthday. Beside me, clutching my left hand with quiet, unshakeable dignity, was a five-year-old boy in a custom-tailored miniature tuxedo. He looked like a miniature porcelain king, his sharp features and dark, calculating eyes mirroring the man standing fifty feet away on the mezzanine.

A champagne glass shattered on the parquet floor below. Lucian Moretti had dropped his glass, the crystal exploding into shards around his polished dress shoes. His entire body locked up as if struck by lightning, the color completely draining from his face until he looked like a walking corpse. ""Serena...?"" his voice broke, barely a raspy whisper that only his closest guards could hear. Victoria gasped, her manicured fingers flying to her throat as she stared at the boy whose face was an unmistakable, undeniable carbon copy of the man she had spent five years trying to tame. Serena Moretti was not rotting at the bottom of the East River; she was standing before the entire world, holding the heir Lucian had wept for in an empty nursery for five long years.
