Chapter 9 - The Confession on Paper

Alexander survived.

The surgeon managed to remove two bullets from his shoulder and side, missing his vital organs by mere inches. When he finally woke up forty-eight hours later in a private, heavily guarded recovery room, I was sitting in the armchair beside his bed.

He turned his head slowly, groaning from the stitches, his gaze finding mine instantly.

""You stayed,"" he rasped, his voice rough from the breathing tube.

""I promised I wouldn't run,"" I said softly, pouring him a cup of fresh water and holding the straw to his lips. He drank gratefully, his eyes never leaving my face.

Once he finished, I reached into my handbag and pulled out a manila folder. Alexander’s face fell, the color draining from his cheeks again as he recognized the shape of the document.

""The divorce papers,"" he whispered, turning his head away, a look of profound defeat settling over his features. ""I... I understand. If that’s what you need to be happy, Claire... I will sign them. I won't contest custody. I will transfer all my non-syndicate assets to you and our daughter. You will never have to worry about money, safety, or me bothering you ever again.""

""Open the folder, Alexander,"" I commanded gently.

With shaking fingers, Alexander opened the manila envelope. Inside wasn't the divorce decree.

It was a legal restructuring agreement signed by Chicago’s top federal attorneys, dated three weeks ago.

Alexander blinked in confusion, reading the document. ""What... what is this?""

""Marco gave it to me while you were in surgery,"" I explained, leaning forward. ""He told me what you've been doing for the last four months. You didn't just search for me, Alexander. You dismantled your entire syndicate.""

Alexander swallowed hard, looking down at the papers.

""You severed all ties with the families,"" I continued, my voice thick with emotion. ""You handed over territory, liquidated the illicit operations, paid off the cartels to leave Chicago permanently, and transitioned everything into legitimate maritime and real estate corporations. Marco told me that the Volkov hit wasn't just random—they were furious because you refused to launder their money anymore.""

""I had to clean the blood off my hands,"" Alexander murmured, tears pooling in his eyes as he looked at me. ""You told me you didn't want our child growing up around monsters. You were right, Claire. I couldn't be a mafia king and be the father you deserved. So I killed the king.""

He reached out, his trembling fingers hovering near my hand, asking for permission before finally resting against my knuckles.

""I don't expect you to forget what happened,"" he said, his voice breaking. ""I know I broke your heart. I know I humiliated you. But I swear on whatever soul I have left, I will spend every second of the rest of my life earning your trust back. If it takes ten years, twenty years... I’ll wait. Just let me be a father. Let me be the man you fell in love with.""
