Chapter 10 - Coming Home

Three weeks later, the spring sun was shining brightly over Haven Harbor.

Alexander was discharged from the hospital, walking with a slight limp and a black sling supporting his healing shoulder, but the hollow, haunted look had completely vanished from his face.

We didn't go back to the cold, towering penthouse in Chicago. Instead, Alexander bought a sprawling, beautiful cedar estate perched high on the bluffs of Maine, overlooking the sparkling Atlantic Ocean. The gardens were filled with white lilies, hydrangeas, and lavender—the very flowers I had loved tending to.

His mother, Donna Beatrice, had been permanently relocated to an estate in southern Italy with a modest monthly allowance and strict instructions that she was never to set foot in our home without my explicit invitation. Sophia Reynolds had vanished entirely, cut off and forgotten, a relic of a past that no longer had any power over us.

Two months later, on a warm July morning, our daughter was born.

We named her Grace—because it was through unmerited grace that our shattered family had been put back together.

I stood by the nursery window of our coastal home, holding Grace against my chest as she slept peacefully, wrapped in a soft pink blanket. The sound of gentle waves crashing against the rocky shore below filled the room with tranquil music.

Strong, warm arms wrapped gently around my waist from behind. Alexander rested his chin against my shoulder, his lips pressing a tender kiss against the curve of my neck before he reached down to stroke Grace's tiny, soft cheek.

""She looks just like you,"" Alexander murmured softly, his voice full of an awe that no empire or billion-dollar fortune could ever buy.

I turned slightly in his embrace, looking up into his hazel eyes. The cold, ruthless predator was truly gone. In his eyes now was only warmth, devotion, and an unshakeable peace.

""She has your stubbornness,"" I teased gently.

Alexander smiled, a genuine, radiant smile that reached his eyes. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. Inside rested my original platinum wedding band, polished until it gleamed like new.

He didn't demand. He didn't order. Instead, Chicago's former king slowly lowered himself onto one knee on the soft nursery rug, looking up at me with utter reverence.

""Claire Bennett,"" he said, his voice steady and full of love. ""You walked away when I was a fool, and you saved my life when I was broken. Will you let me spend forever being the husband you always deserved? Will you take this ring back?""

Tears of pure happiness blurred my vision. For the first time in years, my heart felt completely whole, safe, and cherished.

""Put it on my finger, Alexander,"" I whispered.

He slipped the platinum band back onto my finger where it belonged, kissed my knuckles, and stood up, pulling both me and our baby into a warm, protective embrace that I knew would never let us go again."
