Chapter 7 - Blood Never Lies

The sound of her voice, ragged yet unbroken, shattered the last four years of my frozen soul.

I dropped my rifle to the floor. The weapon clattered loudly against the tiles, but I didn't care. I dropped to my knees beside her bed, my hands trembling violently as I reached toward her face.

""Isabella,"" I choked out, the word tearing out of my chest like a prayer. ""Isabella, my love.""

She froze instantly. The breath caught in her throat. Slowly, terrified that she was dreaming yet another cruel hallucination, she turned her head back toward me. Her green eyes, filled with unspeakable pain and exhaustion, locked onto my scarred brow, my cold gray eyes, and the tears spilling freely down my face.

""Dominic?"" she gasped, her voice barely an exhale. Her trembling fingers reached up, touching my jaw, feeling the rough stubble against her palm. ""Is it... is it really you? Or am I dying?""

""You're not dying, bella,"" I sobbed, pressing my forehead against hers, pulling her frail frame into my arms, heedless of the tactical gear between us. ""I found you. I swear to God, I found you. You're safe. You're coming home.""

She burst into uncontrolled, racking sobs, her arms wrapping around my neck with astonishing strength, clinging to me as if the earth were opening beneath us. ""Dominic! Dominic, our baby! Vincent took her! He took our little girl three days ago! He said he was going to put her in an orphanage where I’d never find her! Please, you have to save Mia! You have to—""

""Mia is safe!"" I pulled back slightly, cupping her tear-streaked face in my hands. ""Listen to me, Isabella! Mia found me! She drove her little pink bicycle right into my car on Fifth Avenue! She had your necklace! She gave me the photo! She is safe in my penthouse right now, eating strawberries and sleeping in my bed!""

Isabella let out a scream of pure, unadulterated relief, burying her face into my chest again, her tears soaking through my shirt. ""She made it... my brave little girl made it... she found her daddy...""

""Boss!"" Dante's voice crackled through my earpiece with urgent alarm. ""We have incoming vehicles! Salieri's personal enforcers are surrounding the compound! The timer has four minutes left, and they’ve cut the helicopter's exfil route! We have to move now!""

I gently unhooked the IV lines from Isabella’s arm, wrapped her tightly in the heavy hospital blanket, and scooped her up into my arms. She felt as light as a feather, starved of sunlight and freedom, but her heart was beating against mine, alive and unbroken.

""Hold onto me, wife,"" I whispered against her hair. ""We're going to walk through hell, and then we're going home.""

""I never stopped believing you'd come,"" she whispered, her arms locked around my neck.

I carried her up the concrete stairs, kicked the steel door open, and stepped back into the war zone.
