Chapter 2 - The Safehouse in the Clouds

The penthouse atop the Moretti Tower was built like an impenetrable fortress eighty stories above Manhattan, reinforced with ballistic glass, private elevator shafts, and round-the-clock mercenary guards. It was a place designed for war, not for a toddler who carried a pink bunny bandage in her pocket.
As soon as the elevator doors parted, the little girl wriggled down from my arms. Her tiny shoes squeaked against the polished black marble. She stopped, staring up at the vaulted ceilings and the sprawling view of the Hudson River, her mouth forming a tiny 'O' of wonder.
""Big castle,"" she whispered, turning back to look at me with wide, searching eyes. ""Are you really my daddy? Mommy said daddy is big like a bear and has a line on his forehead."" She tapped the scar above her own brow, matching the jagged line left by a rival's blade seven years ago.
I knelt down on the marble, lowering myself until we were eye-to-eye. To my men, I was an executioner. To this fragile soul, I wanted to be nothing more than a shield. ""Yes, princess. I am your daddy. What is your name?""
""Mia,"" she said proudly, puffing her chest. ""Mia Elena Moretti! Mommy told me to say the whole thing if I got lost!""
Hearing Isabella's surname roll off that tiny tongue sent a shockwave through my chest. Elena was my mother’s name. Isabella had carried my family's legacy alone, in hiding, while I lived in a penthouse soaked in grief and blood.
""Mia,"" I repeated, my voice cracking slightly. ""Where did you leave Mommy today? How did you get to my car?""
Mia’s face instantly darkened. Her small lower lip began to tremble, and she reached back into her little lavender backpack, pulling out a faded, folded piece of heavy paper. ""A lady with loud shoes took me away from the cabin in the trees. She put me on a big train. She told me to ride my bike down the street with the big glass house when the black car stopped. She said daddy’s car has the silver angel on the front.""
I took the paper from her small hands. It was a train receipt from an upstate junction three hours north, paired with a handwritten map directing a child toward the exact intersection where my convoy passed every Tuesday at three o’clock. Someone had planned this route with surgical precision. Someone who knew my exact schedule, my security routes, and my vehicle preferences.
""Boss,"" Marco murmured, standing near the doorway with a silver tray bearing a plate of sliced fruit and warm milk. ""Dr. Rossi is here. He brought the DNA sequencing kit and pediatric equipment as you requested.""
Mia immediately shrank behind my leg, clutching the fabric of my trousers. ""No shots! The bad man with the needle hurts mommy!""
A red haze crossed my vision. ""No shots, princess. I swear to you on my life. Just a little cotton swab on your cheek like a soft kiss. Can we do that?""
She looked up at me, studying my eyes with the astonishing discernment children possess. Slowly, she nodded. ""Only if you hold my hand.""
""I will never let go of your hand again,"" I promised her.
Dr. Rossi performed the swab gently, clearly unsettled by the sheer intensity in the room. He packed the sample into a refrigerated metal canister. ""Dominic, I’ll run this through the private lab immediately. High-priority rapid sequence. We'll have definitive genetic confirmation in two hours.""
""One hour, Rossi,"" I countered without looking away from Mia, who had already discovered a bowl of fresh strawberries and was devouring them with delightful abandon. ""And test for common sedatives or toxins. If anyone gave her anything to suppress memories or keep her quiet, I want to know the exact compound.""
""Understood,"" the doctor whispered and hurried toward the elevator.
I turned back to Mia, gently wiping a smudge of strawberry juice from her chin. ""Mia, you said the bad man hid mommy in a dark room. Did the bad man have a car like mine?""
May you like
Mia nodded vigorously, swallowing her fruit. ""He comes when it rains. He shouts at mommy. He tells mommy that daddy forgot all about us and married someone else. But mommy cried and said daddy would burn the city down before he forgot.""
Tears, hot and foreign, threatened to spill over my eyelids. Isabella had kept my memory alive in the darkness of captivity. And while she suffered, I had sat at the head of a mahogany table, letting the syndicate convince me she was dead, letting the monster who took her sit right at my right hand.
