Chapter 9 - Breaking the Vipers

The kitchen service corridor reeked of spilled oil and stale bread. Marco and Isabella rushed toward the loading dock where their private armored limousine was waiting with the engine running.
""Hurry up!"" Isabella shrieked, kicking off her high heels as she ran, her expensive gown torn and stained with soot. ""He’s going to kill us, Marco! You said he was a cornered dog!""
""Shut up and get in the car!"" Marco barked, shoving the heavy steel exit door open.
They burst into the cold alleyway, only to freeze in their tracks.
Blocking the alleyway was an armored Suburban. Standing beside the open driver’s door was Frank, flanked by four heavily armed Hayes enforcers with automatic rifles raised.
Marco whipped around to run back inside, but Desmond was already standing in the doorway, Norah at his side. Rain began to fall again, hissing against the hot exhaust of the idling vehicle.
""Desmond, please!"" Isabella dropped to her knees on the wet asphalt, weeping hysterically, her hands raised in surrender. ""It was my father! It was Marco! I didn't know about Julian! I swear to God, Desmond, I loved you! I just wanted to be your wife!""
Desmond looked down at her with nothing but cold disgust. ""You sat at my table this morning, Isabella. You drank from Norah's cup, and you bragged about replacing her. You knew about Julian before you ever agreed to our engagement. You were going to let them murder me after the ceremony.""
He turned his gaze to Marco. Marco’s arrogance was completely gone, replaced by the hollow, trembling terror of a man who realized there was no escape.
""Drop the gun, Marco,"" Desmond commanded.
Marco looked at Desmond, then looked at Norah. In a final, desperate act of cowardice, he whipped his gun toward Norah, intending to take her down with him.
He never finished the motion.
Norah raised her revolver and fired twice. Both rounds struck Marco in the center of his chest. He staggered backward, his eyes wide with shock, before collapsing face-first into a puddle of oily rainwater. He didn't move again.
Isabella let out a bloodcurdling scream, curling into a ball on the pavement.
Desmond walked over to Norah, gently taking the smoking revolver from her trembling hand and tucking it into his belt. He wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her shaking body against his side.
""Frank,"" Desmond said, not taking his eyes off Norah. ""Hand Isabella over to the federal authorities along with the unredacted ledgers. Let her spend the rest of her youth in a federal penitentiary for Julian's murder and international racketeering. Take Vincenzo to the warehouse on Pier 40. I’ll deal with him later.""
""Yes, Boss,"" Frank said, gesturing for his men to secure the weeping woman.
Desmond turned Norah around, lifting her chin until she was looking at him. The rain washed over her face, clearing away the soot and dried blood.

""It’s over,"" he whispered. ""Your father's name is cleared. Julian is avenged. It’s over.""
Norah buried her face in his chest, her fingers clutching his lapels as five years of hidden grief, terror, and exhaustion finally broke free in quiet, cleansing tears. Desmond held her beneath the falling rain, sheltering her from the dark world they had just brought to its knees.
