Chapter 8 - Sins of the Father

Gunfire shattered the crystal chandeliers as Marco and three Rossi enforcers opened fire toward the balcony. Desmond shoved Norah behind the reinforced marble balustrade, drawing twin automatics and returning fire with lethal precision. Two of Marco’s men dropped instantly, their weapons clattering across the banquet tables.

""Frank, execute phase two!"" Desmond spoke into his earpiece.

Down on the ballroom floor, the Costello syndicate men moved in, disarming the confused and panicking Rossi guards. The other mafia bosses, realizing that Carlo had breached the ancient syndicate code by murdering Julian during an active peace treaty, withdrew their support immediately, diving beneath tables or retreating toward the service corridors.

Marco scrambled toward the kitchen exit, dragging Isabella behind him. Carlo, refusing to run, stood in the center of the ruined dance floor, his gun leveled at the stairs as Desmond descended into the smoke and dust.

Vincenzo tried to crawl toward the service elevator. Desmond didn't even look down as he walked past; he merely fired a single, calculated round into Vincenzo’s right kneecap. The old traitor shrieked in agony, collapsing against a tray of shattered champagne glasses.

""You should have stayed in the woods, Desmond!"" Carlo snarled, his hand shaking as he aimed his pistol at Desmond’s chest. ""Julian thought he was untouchable too. But this city respects power, not loyalty!""

""This city respects debts, Carlo,"" Desmond said, walking forward steadily, without breaking stride. ""And Julian’s debt has come due.""

Carlo pulled the trigger.

The hammer clicked on an empty chamber.

Norah stepped out from the base of the staircase, her tablet glowing in the darkness. ""I disabled your firing pin's biometric authorization ten minutes ago, Carlo. You modernized your family's weapons grid through our server last year. You really should have read the fine print in my security updates.""

Carlo’s eyes widened in sheer, helpless horror.

Desmond reached him in three swift strides, stripping the weapon from the old man’s grip and throwing him to his knees with a brutal blow across the temple. Desmond pressed the cold barrel of his own Glock against the crown of Carlo’s head.

""Tell Julian I kept my promise,"" Desmond whispered.

A single gunshot silenced the ballroom.
