Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Grass

The fortified safehouse in the Catskills was an impenetrable compound constructed of reinforced concrete and dark slate, buried deep within a dense pine forest sixty miles north of Manhattan. By dawn, the rain had turned to a light morning mist that clung to the evergreens.
Inside the compound's secure communication suite, multiple monitors displayed live feeds of the Hayes syndicate's bank accounts, shipping ports, and corporate headquarters. Norah, wearing an oversized cashmere sweater provided by Desmond’s staff and sporting fresh bandages, sat before a bank of computer terminals. Her fingers flew across the keyboard with dazzling speed, decrypting the backup drives she had hidden in the red ledger’s spine.
Desmond stood behind her, watching the numbers unfold. Beside him stood Frank, a scarred veteran whose loyalty to the Hayes family had been bought with blood during Desmond’s father’s reign.
""Look at this,"" Norah said, bringing up a series of synchronized wire transfers. ""Vincenzo didn't just take bribes from Carlo. He’s been redirecting the automated payroll of your outer-borough enforcement teams. At midnight tonight, twelve of your key checkpoints in Brooklyn and Queens will have their security codes overridden by Rossi shell companies. They were planning to take the entire city without firing a shot while you were standing at the altar exchanging vows with Isabella.""
Frank let out a low whistle, spitting on the polished floor. ""That bastard. Vincenzo was Julian’s godfather. He held you at your baptism, Boss.""
""Treasons rarely come from enemies, Frank,"" Desmond replied coldly. ""They come from the men who share your bread.""
Suddenly, the encrypted line on the main console began to flash. An incoming high-priority video call from Desmond’s Manhattan executive suite was requesting access.
Desmond gestured to Frank, who hit the accept key.
The wide screen flickered to life. Sitting in Desmond’s leather chair behind his mahogany desk was Isabella Rossi. She was immaculately dressed in a designer cream suit, sipping an espresso from Norah’s favorite porcelain cup. Standing directly behind her, looking nervous but defiant, was Vincenzo Cole.
""Desmond, darling,"" Isabella said, a sharp, patronizing smile curling her crimson lips. ""You missed our final cake tasting this morning. The caterers were dreadfully disappointed.""
""Enjoy the chair while you can, Isabella,"" Desmond said, his face carved from granite. ""It’s the only part of my empire you will ever possess.""
Isabella’s smile vanished, replaced by an ugly, aristocratic sneer. ""Don't be dramatic, Desmond. We know you have the ledger. Marco told my father everything. You think running away to the woods changes your position? We have the city. Vincenzo has handed over the port keys, the union leaders have signed with Carlo, and the District Attorney is holding an indictment with your name on it for the Union dock shipments. You are a fugitive by lunchtime.""
Vincenzo stepped forward, leaning toward the camera lens. ""Be smart, kid,"" the old capo said, his voice pleading yet hollow. ""Julian was stubborn, and look where it got him. Carlo is offering you a settlement. Hand over the girl, surrender the ledger, and leave the country. We’ll let you keep your offshore accounts in Zurich. You can live like a king in South America. Fight this, and we’ll bury you next to your brother.""
Desmond leaned in, his eyes narrowing until they looked like twin shards of flint. ""Vincenzo. When I take your head, I won't do it from behind a sniper rifle like you did with Julian. I will look into your eyes so you can see your own failure.""
He reached out and severed the connection, plunging the room into abrupt silence.

Norah turned in her chair, her face pale. ""They have the DA, Desmond. Even if we present this ledger to law enforcement, Carlo’s puppets in the federal branch will bury it before it reaches an independent grand jury. We can't fight them through the system.""
""I never intended to use the system,"" Desmond said quietly. He turned to Frank. ""Assemble the strike team. Call in the debt from the Costello family in New Jersey. Tell them the Rossi monopoly is over, and the docks are open for negotiation. We move tonight.""
