Chapter 9 - The Vow on the Lake

The morning of the wedding dawned with an ethereal beauty. A soft, golden mist hovered over the mirrored surface of Lake Como, parting just as church bells began to chime from the ancient stone cathedral of San Giovanni.
The ceremony was held on the private lakeside lawns of the villa. Breathtaking arches of white hydrangeas, gardenias, and eucalyptus framed the panoramic view of the water and the snow-dusted Alps in the distance.
Over three hundred guests sat in reverent silence as the string quartet began to play the bridal processional.
At the altar stood Don Lorenzo Cattaneo. He wore a bespoke midnight-blue three-piece tuxedo, his posture immaculate, the faint scars on his face softened by a look of sheer, breathless wonder. Beside him stood Fausto, serving proudly as his best man.
The double iron gates at the rear of the lawn opened.
First came Mia.
She wore a miniature white tulle dress with a satin sash that matched Lorenzo’s tuxedo, a delicate crown of baby’s breath resting in her dark curls. Under her left arm, as always, was Bruno the teddy bear—who was proudly sporting a tiny black velvet bowtie handcrafted by Sofia. In her right hand, Mia carried a basket of dried lavender petals, which she scattered with dramatic, joyful enthusiasm, beaming at the guests who couldn't help but smile at the little flower girl.
And then came Sofia.
A collective gasp rippled through the gathering.
She walked down the stone pathway with an elegance that commanded total reverence. Her cathedral veil billowed softly in the alpine breeze, her eyes locked entirely onto Lorenzo. There was no father to give her away, but she needed none; she walked toward the man who had sheltered her child, healed her broken spirit, and given her a reason to believe in love again.
When she reached the altar, Lorenzo stepped down to take her hand, raising her delicate knuckles to his lips.
""You look like an angel,"" he whispered, loud enough only for her to hear.
""Only because you gave me wings,"" she answered softly.
The elderly priest, Father Donato, cleared his throat, smiling warmly at the couple. The traditional vows were spoken, rich with centuries of faith and solemnity. But when the time came for the personal vows, Lorenzo turned fully toward Sofia, holding both of her trembling hands in his.
""Sofia,"" Lorenzo spoke, his voice resonant, echoing across the quiet lake. ""I lived in darkness for thirty-five years. I believed this world was built only on power, blood, and fear. I thought my legacy would be written on tombstones. But you and your daughter walked into my life with nothing more than a warm meal and a teddy bear, and you taught me that the greatest power a man can possess is the willingness to protect those he loves. I vow to stand as your shield against every storm. I vow to love you, cherish you, and honor you as my equal, my partner, and the queen of my heart, until my very last breath.""
Tears streamed freely down Sofia’s face, catching the morning light like liquid diamonds.
""Lorenzo,"" she replied, her voice ringing clear and true. ""When I had lost all hope, when the world told me I was disposable, you saw value in me. You gave my daughter a home, and you gave my heart peace. I vow to love you fiercely through every trial. I vow to stand beside you, to comfort you in weakness, to celebrate you in strength, and to build a life filled with joy, laughter, and unbreakable loyalty. You are my home, Lorenzo.""
The priest smiled, raising his hands in blessing. ""By the authority vested in me, I pronounce you husband and wife. Don Lorenzo, you may kiss your bride.""
Lorenzo didn't hesitate. He gently lifted her veil, cupped her face in his hands, and kissed her with a deep, passionate tenderness that sealed their souls together forever.
The guests erupted into thunderous applause, echoing across the waters of Como.
Before they could turn to face the crowd, a small tug pulled at Lorenzo’s trousers.
Lorenzo looked down. Mia was standing between them, holding Bruno up toward them with an expectant look.

""Kiss Bruno too!"" Mia demanded loudly.
Lorenzo laughed heartily, scooped Mia up in his left arm, and pulled Sofia tightly against his right side. Together, Don Lorenzo and Donna Sofia leaned down and planted a kiss on each of the stuffed bear’s ears, while Mia giggled with unrestrained delight.
