Chapter 5 - The Hostage in the Salon

The grand salon of Villa Cattaneo was plunged into near darkness, illuminated only by the strobing red emergency backup lights. Broken glass covered the marble floor, and the heavy smell of cordite drifted through the air.

Sofia was on her knees, her arms pinned behind her back by one of Marco’s rogue loyalists. Her lip was split and bleeding, but her eyes never left her daughter.

Mia was sitting on the edge of an antique gilded sofa, tightly clutching Bruno the bear to her chest. She was crying silently, huge tears rolling down her chubby cheeks, terrified by the loud bangs and the angry men shouting in the dark.

""Shut that kid up!"" Marco barked, pacing the room like a caged animal. He held an automatic pistol in his right hand, his finger twitching nervously against the trigger guard. He had realized his coup was collapsing the moment Emilio’s private plane failed to take off. Now, surrounded by loyalist guards outside the salon doors, he had only one card left to play.

""She's just a baby, Marco! Please!"" Sofia begged, struggling against the heavy grip holding her down. ""Take me! Let her go! She doesn't understand any of this!""

""She's the only reason Lorenzo hasn't ordered this entire room blown apart with flashbangs!"" Marco snarled, turning toward Sofia with wild, desperate eyes. ""I saw how he looked at that little brat! The great Don Lorenzo, turned soft by a kitchen maid and a box of cold pizza! It’s pathetic!""

Suddenly, the heavy double oak doors of the grand salon groaned.

The hinges screamed as they were wrenched open. The room fell into absolute, suffocating silence.

Standing in the doorway, framed by the blinding white tactical spotlights carried by the assault team behind him, was Lorenzo Cattaneo. He wasn't using his cane. He stood upright, his posture commanding and terrifying, holding a heavy black combat shotgun across his chest. His eyes were cold voids of pure, unadulterated death.

""Marco,"" Lorenzo’s voice cut through the darkness, steady and chillingly calm.

Marco instantly stepped behind the sofa, snatching Mia by the collar of her dress and hauling her up, pressing the cold barrel of his pistol against the little girl's temple.

""Don't move, Lorenzo!"" Marco shrieked, his voice cracking with hysteria. ""One step and I paint this sofa with her brains! Tell your men to back off! Bring an armored car to the front terrace and give me safe passage to the Swiss border, or she dies right here!""

Mia let out a small, terrified wail. ""Mister Lorenzo... it hurts... my bear dropped...""

Lorenzo didn't look at the gun. He looked directly into Mia’s tear-filled eyes. His voice transformed from the roar of a syndicate executioner into the soothing warmth of a protector.

""Close your eyes, Mia,"" Lorenzo said gently. ""Cover your ears with your hands. Do it right now, little one.""

Mia looked at him, trusted him completely, and immediately squeezed her eyes shut, pressing both hands over her ears.

""You think you're getting out of this valley alive, Marco?"" Lorenzo said, his gaze shifting back to his traitorous capo. ""Look at me. Look into my eyes and tell me if you see a man who negotiates.""

""I will kill her!"" Marco screamed, cocking the hammer of the pistol.

""You won't,"" Lorenzo whispered.

Before Marco could comprehend the words, a laser dot flared crimson directly between his eyes. From the high mezzanine above the salon, Fausto fired a single suppressed round from his sniper rifle.

The bullet took Marco directly through the center of his forehead.

Marco’s eyes went wide with shock. His grip loosened, and his body collapsed backward over the gilded sofa like a bag of wet sand.

In the exact same microsecond, Lorenzo raised his shotgun and fired two devastating blasts into the loyalist guard holding Sofia, blowing the man through the glass display cabinet behind him.

The assault was over in less than two seconds.

Lorenzo closed the distance across the marble floor in three long strides, completely ignoring the tearing agony in his fractured ribs and knee. He scooped Mia into his arms, pulling her small, shaking frame tightly against his broad chest, shielding her view from the carnage on the floor.

""I have you,"" Lorenzo whispered, his voice cracking with raw emotion as he buried his face in her dark curls. ""I have you, Mia. It's over. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again.""

Sofia broke free from where she fell, crawling across the floor and throwing her arms around both of them, sobbing uncontrollably. Lorenzo didn't push her away. Instead, he wrapped his massive arm around Sofia’s trembling shoulders, pulling mother and child into his protective embrace amid the ruins of his ancestral home.
