Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the Past

The day of the rehearsal dinner arrived with pristine blue skies over Lake Como. Long banquet tables were set on the grand marble terrace, draped in white linen and adorned with white roses, crystal chandeliers suspended from the pergolas, and the finest vintage wines from the Cattaneo private cellars.

Over two hundred elite guests were in attendance—high-ranking diplomats, corporate moguls, and syndicate capos who knew better than to miss an event hosted by Don Lorenzo.

Among the guests, however, was someone who did not belong.

Sofia was chatting warmly with the wife of the mayor of Como when she caught sight of a man standing near the terrace edge, nursing a glass of bourbon. He was tall, thin, with greasy hair combed back and a faded scar slicing through his upper lip.

Sofia’s blood turned instantly to ice. The champagne flute in her hand slipped, shattering against the stone tiles.

""Sofia?"" the mayor’s wife asked in concern. ""Are you alright, my dear?""

""Excuse me... just for a moment,"" Sofia whispered, her voice barely audible.

The man was Gianni Valenti—the loan shark who had terrorized her after her first husband’s death. He had somehow secured an invitation using forged diplomatic credentials from a corrupt port official in Genoa.

As Sofia backed away toward the villa doors, Valenti caught her eye and smirked, setting his glass down and quietly following her into the quiet, dimly lit gallery corridor.

""Well, well, little Sofia,"" Valenti murmured, slipping his hands into his tailored suit pockets as he cornered her near an antique marble bust. ""Look at you. From scrubbing grease off stove burners to wearing diamonds that could buy a fleet of yachts. You certainly know how to land on your feet.""

""How did you get in here?"" Sofia demanded, her voice shaking despite her desperate attempt to stay strong. ""Lorenzo ordered your operations destroyed. You should be in prison.""

""Your boyfriend cost me millions,"" Valenti hissed, stepping uncomfortably close, his breath smelling of sour tobacco and bourbon. ""He ruined my business in Genoa. But he didn't kill me. Big mistake. I still have the original promissory notes your dead husband signed. And I have copies of the documents proving where his gambling money actually came from—stolen directly from syndicate treasuries.""

""Leave us alone,"" Sofia pleaded, backing against the wall. ""Take whatever money you want, just leave my daughter out of this!""

""Oh, I'll take money,"" Valenti sneered, reaching out a greasy hand to touch the lace on her dress. ""Fifty million euros, wire-transferred tonight. Or tomorrow morning, right before you walk down that aisle, I release documents to the international press proving your late husband was an informant for the federal police. How do you think Don Lorenzo’s traditionalist allies will react when they find out he’s marrying the widow of a rat?""

Before Sofia could scream, a heavy, iron-like hand gripped Valenti’s wrist from behind.

The sound of snapping bones was sharp and loud, like a dry branch breaking in winter.

Valenti shrieked in agony, dropping to his knees as his wrist was twisted at an impossible, sickening angle.

Lorenzo stepped out of the shadows, towering over the fallen loan shark. Beside him stood Fausto, his hand already resting inside his jacket on the grip of a silenced pistol.

""You speak very loudly in another man’s house, Valenti,"" Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a register so chilling that even the air in the corridor seemed to freeze.

Valenti cradled his mangled wrist, sobbing in pain on the marble floor. ""Cattaneo! Wait! This is business! Her husband owed—""

""Her husband is dead,"" Lorenzo interrupted, lifting his heavy ebony cane and placing the brass tip firmly against Valenti’s throat, slowly pressing down until the man’s face turned purple. ""And any debt associated with that name ceased to exist the day Sofia walked into my life.""

Sofia stood shaking against the wall, but Lorenzo turned his eyes toward her, his gaze instantly shifting from ruthless cruelty to deep, reassuring warmth.

""Did he touch you, Sofia?"" Lorenzo asked softly.

""No,"" Sofia whispered, her voice steadying as she looked at the man who loved her. ""You arrived in time.""

Lorenzo looked back down at Valenti, pressing the cane tip slightly harder. ""You made a very foolish calculation coming here today. You thought I was a businessman who feared scandal. You forgot that before I was a businessman, I was an executioner.""

""Please... Lorenzo... mercy..."" Valenti choked out.

""Fausto,"" Lorenzo commanded without looking back.

""Yes, Boss?""

""Take this trash to the lower boathouse. Introduce him to the deep waters of Lake Como. Ensure nothing remains to wash ashore.""

""Consider it done,"" Fausto said calmly, grabbing Valenti by his collar and dragging him down the rear service corridor like a discarded sack of laundry.

Lorenzo tossed his cane aside, stepped forward, and pulled Sofia tightly against his chest. She buried her face in his neck, breathing in the scent of cedarwood, expensive cologne, and absolute security.

""I am so sorry, Lorenzo,"" she cried softly. ""I didn't know he would come here. I didn't want to bring that filth into your life.""

""You didn't bring filth into my life, my love,"" Lorenzo whispered, kissing her tears away. ""You brought me salvation. Tomorrow, you become my wife, and nothing in heaven or hell will ever tear our family apart.""
