Chapter 4 - The Line in the Sand

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Anna dropped the silver tray with a deafening crash, throwing herself onto the floor beside Sophie, wrapping her weeping daughter tightly in her arms. Sophie buried her face into Anna’s neck, her tiny body shaking with sobs, a bright red handprint blazing across her pale cheek.

Dante did not raise his voice. He did not jump to his feet. He slowly stood up, placing both palms flat on the table. Every muscle in his broad shoulders went taut beneath his black suit. The air in the grand room became thick with lethal intent.

Marcus Vale stepped into the room from the doorway, his eyes darting frantically between Isabella and Dante. "Dante, calm down. Isabella was startled. The child shouldn't have been in here—"

"Shut your mouth, Marcus," Dante said softly.

He walked around the long table. His heavy, polished leather shoes made no sound as he approached where Anna knelt on the floor. He dropped to one knee, looking at the little girl whose face was stained with tears.

"Sophie," Dante murmured.

Sophie peeked through her mother's trembling arms, her bottom lip quivering. "I just wanted to give you the sun, Mr. Dante... the lady hit me."

Dante reached out, his rough thumb gently brushing away a stray tear from her cheek, careful not to touch the inflamed skin. He looked down and saw the yellow star soaking in the red wine. He picked it up, shaking off the droplets, and pressed the damp, stained paper right beside the gold star on his chest.

"I have the sun now, little bird," he whispered. "Nobody touches you in this house. Nobody."

He stood up and turned toward Isabella.

Isabella took a step back, suddenly realizing the horrific miscalculation she had made. The man standing before her was not a polite fiancé or a convenient business partner; he was the apex predator of the city, and the look in his dark eyes promised total annihilation.

"You struck a child under my roof," Dante said, his voice flat, devoid of emotion, which made it infinitely more terrifying.

"Dante, she is just a maid’s daughter!" Antonio Russo barked, stepping between Dante and Isabella, his hand hovering near his jacket pocket. "You disrespect my daughter over a peasant? I demand you remove that servant immediately, or the Russo syndicate breaks every contract with your family tonight!"

Dante tilted his head, his cold gaze shifting from Antonio to Isabella's diamond engagement ring. "Then break them."

He reached into his pocket, pulled out the gold pen he used for official treaties, and tossed it onto the wine-soaked table.

"The engagement is over. The alliance is dead. Take your daughter and leave my property before I forget that we ever broke bread together."
