Chapter 3 - The Cold Alliance

The dining room of the Moretti estate was an intimidating hall lined with seventeenth-century oil paintings and heavy damask drapery. That evening, Don Antonio Russo sat at Dante's right hand, cutting into a rare filet mignon with precise, rhythmic slices. His daughter, Isabella, sat across from him in an emerald satin dress that mirrored the cold calculating gleam in her hazel eyes.

"The wedding invitations are being printed in Milan, Dante," Isabella announced, swirling her vintage Barolo in a crystal goblet. "Five hundred guests. Governors, senators, judges, and the heads of the five families. We expect the ceremony to be held at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross."

Dante sat back in his high-backed mahogany chair, his fingers drumming lightly against the polished wood. On his black lapel, a fresh purple star with silver glitter caught the amber candlelight.

Antonio Russo laid his silver knife down with a distinct, heavy clatter that silenced the room. He pointed a diamond-ringed finger directly at Dante's jacket.

"What is that absurdity on your lapel, Dante?" Antonio asked, his voice rough and abrasive like sandpaper. "Marcus told me you’ve taken in a servant's child. I thought it was a joke. We are about to merge our territories and hand over the southern shipping lanes to your family. I will not have my daughter marry a man who is being ridiculed across every social club in Massachusetts."

Dante’s gaze did not waver. The ambient room temperature seemed to drop ten degrees in a single second. The servants standing against the walls stopped breathing.

"What I wear in my own dining room, Antonio, is none of your concern," Dante said in a low, level tone that carried more threat than a chambered round. "And the management of my household remains strictly my affair."

Isabella set her glass down, her crimson lips tightening into a venomous sneer. "It becomes my affair when that filth runs around my future home, Dante! Yesterday, that little rat tried to touch my silk scarf with sticky hands! She belongs in an orphanage, not the second-floor blue room! Fire the mother, send the child to a state facility, and let’s conclude our business like adults!"

Before Dante could respond, the pantry door swung open. Anna walked into the dining room carrying a silver dessert tray, her eyes trained submissively on the Persian carpet. Behind her, Sophie had slipped through the swing door unnoticed, clutching a yellow paper star in her small fist.

"Look, Mr. Dante!" Sophie cried out in pure, unfiltered joy, running straight toward the head of the table. "I made a sun star for your dessert!"

"Get that creature away from me!" Isabella shrieked, jumping to her feet and knocking her wine glass over. The dark red liquid spilled across the white linen cloth like fresh arterial blood.

Isabella lunged forward, her diamond-encrusted hand striking Sophie across the face with a sharp, sickening crack. The little girl lost her balance, tumbling onto the hard parquet floor with a heartbroken wail, the yellow paper star fluttering from her hand into the pool of spilled wine.
