Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Shadows

By sunrise, the sprawling Moretti estate was alive with tension. Marcus Vale stood on the limestone terrace, a cigar unlit between his teeth, watching two young housemaids polish the marble banisters. He had spent twelve years whispering into the ears of Boston’s most feared crime family, carving out his own lucrative empire under Dante's shadow. But over the last two weeks, a strange shift had occurred in the fortress.
"A gold sticker," Marcus muttered to his associate, Gino, who leaned against a stone pillar checking an encrypted phone. "The Boss walks into the harbor docks yesterday, surrounded by twenty armed dockworkers, with a child's kindergarten sticker pasted to his chest like a medal of valor. He didn't even notice them snickering behind his back."
"Or maybe he did notice, and he wanted to see who was foolish enough to laugh out loud," Gino remarked dryly. "Nobody dared."
"It's weakness," Marcus snapped, stepping closer and lowering his voice. "He was supposed to finalize the port transfer with the Russo family three days ago. Isabella came here expecting a wedding agreement and a signed contract for the southern terminals. Instead, Dante spent the evening talking to a maid's brat and putting blue stickers on his collar. Don Antonio Russo is losing his patience. If Dante goes soft now, the entire alliance collapses."
Across the grand courtyard, Anna Miller was hanging white cotton sheets on the drying lines near the servants' quarters. She worked with feverish urgency, her eyes constantly darting toward the second-floor windows where Sophie was supposed to be coloring.
A shadow fell over the wicker laundry basket. Anna gasped, dropping a wooden clothespin into the damp grass.
Marcus Vale stood before her, his gray silk suit sharp, his smile entirely devoid of warmth. "Good morning, Anna. You work very hard for a woman with no references in this state prior to Cambridge."
Anna wiped her hands on her apron, stepping back until her spine met the wooden fence. "Mr. Vale. I do my duties as Mr. Cole assigns them. Is there an issue with the master's linens?"
"The linens are spotless," Marcus said smoothly, taking a slow step forward. "It’s your daughter’s manners that seem rather... overextended. It’s unusual for a common maid's child to wander into Dante Moretti's private chambers. Most people who enter uninvited end up floating in Boston Harbor."
Anna's face drained of color. "She is only three years old, sir. She doesn't understand."

"Then you should teach her," Marcus hissed, his voice dropping into a lethal purr. "Before someone teaches both of you what happens to loose threads. Isabella Russo is going to be the mistress of this house next month. She doesn't like strays, and neither do I. Pack a bag, take your wages, and disappear by the weekend. Consider this professional advice."
Marcus turned on his heel and strode back toward the main house, leaving Anna trembling in the morning chill. She picked up the fallen clothespin, her knuckles white with fear, looking up at the stone walls that felt less like a sanctuary and more like a gilded cage ready to snap shut.
