Chapter 5 - The Cellar of Shadows

The underground cellar was freezing, lit only by a single bare bulb hanging from the damp brick ceiling. The heavy iron door clanged shut, followed by the terrifying sound of a deadbolt turning. I was trapped.

I collapsed onto a wooden crate, pulling my knees to my chest, sobbing uncontrollably. The fear was suffocating, but the betrayal cut far deeper. Dante had looked into my soul; he knew how much Leo meant to me. How could he believe I would ever use a child’s vulnerability as a weapon of espionage?

Hours crawled by like centuries.

Suddenly, around midnight, a faint, rhythmic sound tapped against the ventilation grate near the ceiling.

Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap.

My head snapped up. I scrambled onto the highest shelf, pressing my ear against the iron vent.

""Sophie?"" a tiny, fragile voice echoed through the metal duct.

""Leo!"" I gasped, tears instantly springing to my eyes. ""Leo, my sweet boy, where are you?""

""Daddy is angry. Lady Bianca is talking loud,"" Leo whispered, his voice trembling on the edge of panic. ""They have papers. Red papers. Sophie, I took the shiny box.""

""What shiny box, Leo? What are you talking about?""

""The black box from Lady Bianca's coat. It keeps blinking blue lights. Like the marble.""

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. Bianca hadn't just planted evidence; she had a physical transmitting device. She was the real mole feeding information to the Volkov syndicate, and she was framing me to clear the board, take control of the family, and push Dante into an all-out gang war!

""Leo, listen to me very carefully,"" I whispered through the grate, keeping my voice soothing despite the adrenaline coursing through my veins. ""Can you take the black box and bring it to your daddy? Don't let Bianca see you. Be as quiet as a little shadow.""

""Daddy is in the study,"" Leo said softly. ""I am brave. Like Danny.""

""Yes, my love. You are the bravest boy in the world.""

Minutes later, a commotion erupted upstairs. Shouting echoed through the floorboards above me, followed by the terrifying crack of a single gunshot. My blood ran cold. Was Dante hurt? Had Bianca discovered Leo?

I began violently slamming my fists against the heavy cellar door. ""Let me out! Dante! Leo! Someone help!""

The heavy lock clicked. The door flew open.

Standing in the doorway was Dante, his crisp white shirt stained with fresh blood across the cuff, holding a smoking pistol in his right hand. In his left arm, he carried Leo, who was clutching a high-tech espionage bug and a stack of encoded bank transfers bearing Bianca’s private signature.
