Chapter 4 - Whispers Of Betrayal

Within three weeks, the dynamic inside the fortress shifted dramatically. Leo was thriving. We set up a sensory room filled with soft lighting, weighted blankets, and tactile puzzles. He began speaking in short sentences, whispering words like ""blue,"" ""outside,"" and ""Sophie."" For the first time in his life, he let his father read him a bedtime story without covering his ears in distress.
Dante began spending more time at the estate. He traded his board meetings and syndicate sit-downs for family dinners. Late at night, after Leo fell asleep, Dante and I would sit in his vast library, drinking bourbon by the fire. He told me about the burdens of his life, the mother who had abandoned Leo the moment she realized he wasn't ""normal,"" and the brutal expectations placed upon him by the five families of New York. In turn, I told him about Danny, about my dreams of becoming a pediatric therapist, and the guilt that haunted me for not saving my brother.
A dangerous, unspoken intimacy grew between us. Every accidental touch sent an electric shock straight through my veins.
Then, the storm broke.
One Tuesday morning, Dante was called away to an emergency meeting in Manhattan regarding an unsanctioned raid on one of his distribution docks. While he was gone, Bianca cornered me in the grand foyer, a vicious smile playing on her crimson lips.
""Enjoying playing the lady of the manor, darling?"" she purred.
""I have work to do, Bianca,"" I sighed, holding a basket of Leo's flashcards.
""Oh, I'm sure your work is nearly done,"" she mocked, pulling her smartphone from her purse and displaying a live feed from a popular New York crime blog.
My breath caught in my throat.
On the screen was a grainy photograph of me standing near an alley behind the hotel, talking to a man in a leather jacket. The headline blared in massive bold letters: MAFIA BOSS’S NEW BABYSITTER EXPOSED AS INFORMANT FOR THE VOLKOV SYNDICATE.
The comments below the post were brutal:
She’s playing him for a fool!
A traitor in the Moretti house!
She targeted the kid just to infiltrate the family!
Kill the rat before she sells Dante out!
""This is completely fabricated!"" I cried, my stomach dropping into an abyss. ""That photo was taken six months ago when a random guy asked me for directions outside my old job! I don't even know who the Volkovs are!""
""Save your tears for Dante,"" Bianca sneered, tucking her phone away. ""He received an anonymous dossier this morning linking your bank account to Russian offshore accounts. He’s on his way back right now. And you know what Dante Moretti does to traitors, don't you?""
Before I could defend myself, heavy black SUVs screeched to a halt outside the estate. The heavy front doors were thrown open with a thunderous bang. Dante strode in, flanked by four armed lieutenants. His face was a mask of thunderous, murderous rage. All the warmth, all the shared late-night vulnerability we had built over the past month had vanished into thin air.
""Dante, please listen to me!"" I pleaded, rushing down the stairs. ""It’s a lie! Someone is setting me up!""
Dante didn't stop. He walked straight past me, his jaw clamped shut so tight his muscles twitched. ""Lock her in the wine cellar,"" he commanded his men in a dead voice.

""Dante, no! What about Leo? He needs me!"" I shouted as two guards seized my arms.
Dante paused at the base of the stairs, turning back to me with eyes as cold as the day we met. ""You used my son’s illness to infiltrate my house, Sophie. If Leo weren't under this roof, I would have put a bullet through your head already. Don't speak his name again.""
