Chapter 4 - The Villa of Whispers

The Salvatore ancestral estate was perched high above the Alban Hills, surrounded by centuries-old stone walls, ancient cypress trees, and sprawling olive groves.
It was not a house; it was a private fortress guarded by electronic barriers, guard towers, and men with military-grade training.
Yet inside the main courtyard, the air was peaceful, filled with the scent of wild rosemary, lemon blossoms, and bubbling stone fountains.
Clare and Maya were given an entire sunlit wing on the second floor, complete with private balconies, vaulted frescoed ceilings, and a fully stocked nursery.
Within an hour of their arrival, a team of three elite pediatric otolaryngologists from the prestigious Bambino Gesù Hospital arrived under armed escort.
They set up portable diagnostic imaging machines in the estate’s private medical wing, examining Leo under bright surgical lamps.
Dante stood in the corner of the room with his arms crossed, watching the doctors like a hawk ready to strike.
"Well?" Dante demanded in Italian as the chief surgeon removed his headlamp.
The surgeon, an older man with silver hair and trembling hands, turned toward Dante with genuine astonishment.
"Don Dante... the diagnosis from the American hospital was catastrophic, but structurally incomplete," the doctor explained, switching to English so Clare could understand. "The child does not have nerve necrosis. He has severe congenital bilateral cholesteatoma—a benign keratinizing cyst behind both eardrums that completely immobilizes the ossicular chain."
Clare stepped forward, her medical training instantly taking over. "The mass blocked the sound waves from reaching the cochlea. That's why he didn't react to air vibrations!"
"Precisely," the surgeon nodded, looking at Clare with profound professional admiration. "The bone conduction from your chest bypassed the ossicles entirely, stimulating the inner ear directly. The acoustic nerve is completely intact and healthy."
Dante let out a long, ragged breath, his hands dropping to his sides. "Can it be repaired?"
"With microscopic laser tympanoplasty, yes," the doctor answered. "We can remove the tissue without damaging the facial nerves. But the procedure requires an exceptionally delicate three-month postoperative auditory rehabilitation regimen."
The surgeon turned to look directly at Clare.
"The infant must be taught to interpret sound through immediate, intimate vocal bonding," the doctor added. "Without someone providing continuous, localized phonation, the brain's auditory cortex may permanently atrophy."
Dante turned his intense, penetrating gaze onto Clare.
"Name your price, Clare," Dante said softly. "Stay here. Heal my son. Teach him to hear the world."

Before Clare could answer, Marco burst through the double oak doors, holding a satellite phone with an expression of grim urgency.
"Don Dante," Marco said, glancing anxiously at Clare. "The American embassy in Rome just received a formal extradition request. Richard Jensen landed in Milan thirty minutes ago on a private corporate jet."
