Chapter 9 - The Confession of Margaret Bennett

The morning sun broke through the storm clouds, casting golden rays through the shattered stained-glass windows of the Whitmore grand hall. Federal agents and private medical teams had secured the entire estate. Victoria Sterling was led away in handcuffs, her face buried in her hands, facing charges of conspiracy to commit murder, kidnapping, and corporate treason that would keep her behind bars for life.
Inside the quiet master study, a warm fire crackled in the hearth.
Eleanor sat in the large leather armchair, wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket. In her lap sat Oliver, who was giggling joyfully, his little hands patting Eleanor’s cheeks and then reaching out to touch mine as I sat on the ottoman right beside her.
Our mother, Margaret, stood by the window, her hands trembling as she held two cups of warm tea. She walked over and set them down, falling to her knees before us.
""Can you ever forgive me?"" Margaret wept, taking one of Eleanor's hands and one of mine. ""Twenty-six years ago, when the syndicate war started, your father was murdered. The Whitmore patriarch offered to protect one child in exchange for the family alliance, but he only wanted one heir. I couldn't bear to let them know there were two. I was terrified they would eliminate Claire to keep the succession clean. So I hid Claire with me in the city and gave Eleanor to the Whitmore estate.""
Eleanor reached down and stroked Margaret’s graying hair gently. ""You kept us both alive, Mother. Through twenty-six years of darkness, you carried that secret alone.""
""I should have told you the truth, Claire,"" Margaret looked at me, her eyes filled with sorrow. ""When Eleanor supposedly died in that crash two years ago, Victoria came to my apartment. She showed me pictures of Claire working at the diner. She told me if I ever approached Alexander or revealed Eleanor was still alive, she would have Claire run down in the street. I stayed silent to protect you.""
I wrapped my arms around my mother, leaning my head against hers. ""It’s over now, Mom. The nightmare is over. We’re all here.""
Alexander stepped into the study, carrying a fresh cup of coffee. He had changed out of his combat gear into a simple gray sweater, looking more like a protective father than a terrifying mafia boss. He stood beside Eleanor’s chair, his hand resting gently on her shoulder.
Oliver looked up at Alexander, then at Eleanor, and finally pointed his little finger straight at me, letting out a delighted baby babble that sounded remarkably like, ""Mama two!""

The entire room burst into soft laughter, breaking the tension that had gripped our lives for years.
""He’s not entirely wrong,"" Eleanor smiled, looking up at Alexander and then at me. ""Claire, this family needs you. Oliver needs you. And I think... our sisterhood has twenty-six years of lost time to make up for.""
