Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Safe House

The armored SUV sped through the torrential rain, cutting through the backroads of Virginia toward the Blue Ridge Mountains. Behind us, sirens echoed faintly across the city skyline, but Alexander’s convoy was moving through private access roads unknown to any police radar.
Inside the reinforced cabin, Oliver was asleep against my chest, his little thumb tucked into his mouth. Alexander sat opposite us, reloading a custom silver nine-millimeter with cold precision. Every few seconds, his eyes flickered upward, watching me hold his son.
""You hold him the exact same way she did,"" he murmured, his gravelly voice softer than it had been in the ballroom. ""Eleanor always hummed that strange Irish lullaby when the thunder started.""
My throat locked up. ""My mother used to sing that to me whenever the storms shook our apartment. I thought it was just something she made up to calm me down.""
""It wasn't,"" Alexander said, leaning forward and resting his elbows on his knees. ""Your mother wasn't just a maid, Claire. Twenty-six years ago, the Bennett and Whitmore families signed a blood pact. When the war broke out, Margaret hid the twin daughters—you and Eleanor—in separate foster homes to protect the bloodline. But Eleanor’s foster records leaked, and my father brought her into our inner circle to secure our alliance. We never knew there was another sister.""
""And Victoria?"" I asked, my voice trembling as I remembered the raw malice in the bride's eyes. ""Why did she want me dead?""
""Victoria Sterling was promised to me before Eleanor ever stepped into my life,"" Alexander replied, his jaw tightening until the muscle ticked. ""She spent two years pretending to mourn Eleanor while poisoning my council against my wife's memory. When Oliver was born, Eleanor became untouchable in the family. That’s why the car went off the ridge.""
The SUV screeched to a halt outside a heavily guarded fortress tucked behind an iron gate. Thick stone walls and perimeter towers loomed against the dark sky. We had arrived at the Whitmore family compound—a sanctuary fortified against any military siege.
As we stepped into the private wing of the fortress, an older housekeeper in a gray apron rushed toward us. When she caught sight of my face, she dropped the silver tea tray she was holding, the porcelain shattering against the hardwood floor.
""Mrs. Eleanor?"" she whispered, trembling from head to toe.
""No, Martha,"" Alexander commanded gently. ""This is Claire. Her sister.""
Martha broke down in quiet sobs, but she quickly stepped forward to help take Oliver’s wet coat. As she lifted the sleeping baby, Oliver stirred, instantly whining until his little fingers caught my sleeve again. He wouldn't let go.
""He knows his mother's heartbeat,"" Martha said through her tears. ""Even babies know where home is.""

Before I could answer, Alexander’s phone buzzed sharply on the mahogany desk. He picked it up and tapped the speaker button. A cold, distorted voice echoed into the room:
""Check your east perimeter, Whitmore. You took the wrong sister. If you want Eleanor alive, bring Claire to the docks alone by dawn. If we see a single guard, we send your wife back in a box.""
