Chapter 7 - The Unveiling at Midnight

Vanessa’s knees gave out. She grabbed the edge of the mahogany credenza to keep herself from collapsing onto the floor.

“No...” she whispered, her voice trembling. “No, that’s impossible. You're lying! You're making this up to humiliate me! Adrian, tell me they're lying!”

Adrian didn't spare her a single glance. He walked across the foyer until he was standing directly in front of Nora Bennett.

For the first time since anyone had known Adrian Cole, the ruthless kingpin of New England lowered his head. He looked down at her shorn hair, his hand reaching out again, this time gently touching the soft, uneven ends beside her neck. His fingers were trembling.

“I am so sorry, Nora,” Adrian said. The absolute grief in his voice shocked Martin Shaw to his core. “I left this house in the hands of a monster. I broke my promise to keep you safe.”

Nora looked up into his dark eyes. There was no hatred in her gaze, only a heavy, weary sadness. “You didn't break your promise, Adrian. You simply forgot that when you invite vanity into your home, it will always demand a sacrifice.”

“Where is the braid, Nora?” Adrian whispered.

“I kept it,” Nora replied softly. “It’s at my apartment. It was the last piece of my grandmother’s hands that I had left.”

Adrian closed his eyes for three long seconds. When he opened them, the sorrow had vanished. In its place was an abyss of pure, terrifying ice.

He turned his back on Nora and looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa was weeping now, real tears of terror smudging her expensive mascara. “Adrian, please! I didn't know! I swear to God I didn't know who she was! If you had just told me—”

“If I had told you,” Adrian interrupted, his voice dropping to a deathly whisper, “you would have treated her with fake respect while plotting to destroy her behind my back. Because that is what people like you do. You cannot bear the existence of quiet excellence. You cannot stand a woman who possesses dignity without a diamond on her finger.”

Adrian reached into his pocket and pulled out a heavy pair of stainless-steel shears—the exact same shears Vanessa had used on Nora. He had retrieved them from the side table.

Vanessa gasped and scrambled backward, her back hitting the wall. “Adrian! No! Please! You can’t touch me! My father—!”

“Your father owes fifteen million dollars to my offshore lending accounts in the Cayman Islands,” Adrian said coldly, tossing the heavy shears onto the marble floor. They clattered with a violent metallic ring that bounced off the high ceiling. “Your father’s judicial seat exists because I bought three state senators to confirm him. If I withdraw my backing tomorrow morning, your family will be bankrupt, disgraced, and evicted from your Beacon Hill brownstone by Friday.”

Vanessa slid down against the wall, clutching her knees, sobbing uncontrollably.

Adrian looked down at Martin Shaw. “Martin.”

“Yes, Adrian?”

“Call the district attorney. Tell him the Whitmore family’s offshore trust fund records are being delivered to his personal office via courier. Cancel the wedding announcements. Inform every media outlet in Boston that Miss Whitmore has been permanently removed from the Cole estate.”

“Consider it done,” Shaw said, exhaling a breath he felt he’d been holding for forty-eight hours.

Adrian then looked at Nora.

His entire posture changed again. He knelt down on one knee on the cold marble floor before her—in front of his lawyer, in front of his ruined fiancée, and beneath the portraits of his ancestors.

“Nora,” Adrian said, looking up into her eyes with an openness he had never shown another living soul. “I don't care about Pier 44. Let the feds take the containers. Let the ninety million dollars burn. I don't care about the shipping lines, and I don't care about this damn house. The only thing in this world that ever kept me human was knowing that you were here.”

He reached out his hand, palm upward, offering her everything.

“Don't ever pick up a dust rag in this house again,” Adrian whispered. “Rule it with me. Or walk out those gates and take half of everything I own with you. The choice is yours. But I will spend the rest of my life earning back your forgiveness.”
