Chapter 22 - A Queen’s Gambit

By midnight, the master study of the Cole estate was transformed into a tactical command center. Dominic Vance stood beside Martin Shaw, both men reviewing high-resolution satellite feeds displaying Dante Moretti’s vessel anchored six miles off the coast of Cape Ann. Outside the grand residence, sixty elite security contractors patrolled the grounds, but the domestic staff remained protected and calm in the private living quarters. Nora had personally briefed Helen Mercer and Mike Donnelly, assuring them that every window was fortified with ballistic steel shutters and every access point monitored by automated defensive grids.
Adrian strapped on a shoulder holster beneath his tailored charcoal suit jacket, checking the slide of his custom semi-automatic sidearm with mechanical precision. He turned to Dominic, preparing to issue orders for a seaside ambush at the private marina. But Nora stepped between them, holding a small titanium flash drive. She reminded Adrian that Dante’s primary strength lay in the ten million dollars of mercenary contracts escrowed in an offshore bank in Zurich. Without those funds clearing at dawn, his hired guns would abandon him in international waters.
Nora plugged the drive into the main terminal, bringing up the financial architecture of the Swiss account. During her graduate studies at MIT, she had written the exact algorithmic cryptographic protocols that several Zurich private banking systems still used for international wire verification. Over the past five hours, she had constructed an administrative loop that froze Dante’s liquid reserves under European anti-money laundering protocols. The mercenaries on Dante’s ship were receiving notifications on their encrypted sat-phones that their escrow guarantees were null and void.

Adrian watched the transaction logs freeze on the monitor, a slow, predatory grin spreading across his face. He stepped behind Nora, wrapping his large hands around her waist, kissing the side of her neck where her heavy braid rested. He whispered that his enemies spent millions on guns and armies, yet none of them understood that the most lethal weapon on the eastern seaboard was his brilliant wife sitting behind a desk. Nora turned in his arms, smiling softly, reminding him that brains always lasted longer than bullets.
Suddenly, an alarm chimed on the central monitor. An encrypted incoming video transmission bypassed the outer firewall, pinging directly into the study. Dominic reached for the kill-switch, but Nora shook her head and pressed the accept button. The massive high-definition screen flickered to life, revealing the scarred, weathered face of Dante Moretti, standing on the wind-swept deck of his vessel, the black waves of the Atlantic rolling behind him.
