Chapter 23 - The Ghost of the North End

Dante Moretti stared through the lens with eyes filled with venomous arrogance. He laughed, a raspy sound like gravel grinding beneath heavy boots. He addressed Adrian, mocking him for hiding behind glass walls and a ring, asking if the feared king of Boston had turned into an accountant who spent his days sipping tea with domestic servants. Dante raised a heavy automatic rifle to the camera, declaring that he had forty men ready to burn the Cole estate to ash before sunrise, promising to avenge his brother’s death by wiping out everyone who carried the Cole name.

Adrian stepped into full view of the camera, his presence towering, his voice ice-cold and utterly steady. He did not yell or display fury. He looked Dante dead in the eye and told him to check his offshore banking balance before making promises he could not afford to keep. Adrian pointed out that a leader whose soldiers have not been paid is not an emperor, but a target. Dante’s arrogant smile faltered for a fraction of a second, his eyes shifting slightly off-camera where an aide was frantically waving an encrypted tablet.

Nora stepped forward beside Adrian, her face radiant with absolute calm and undeniable power. She looked directly into Dante’s lens and addressed him by his childhood street name, reminding him of the alley behind the bakery in the North End where his brother had died nine years ago. She revealed that she was the woman who had dragged Adrian out of the blood, stitched his wounds, and kept his breath alive while Marcus searched the streets. She informed Dante that his brother had failed because he confused cruelty with strength, and Dante was about to make the exact same mistake.

Nora announced that the harbor master in Gloucester had already coordinated with the United States Coast Guard and federal maritime authorities. The ship Dante stood on was currently classified as a hostile rogue vessel carrying undeclared military hardware into domestic waters. Three naval cutters were already closing the six-mile perimeter, and their radar systems were locked onto his coordinates. If he fired a single round, he would not be fighting the Cole syndicate; he would be obliterated by naval artillery under international maritime laws.

Dante cursed violently in Italian, shouting at his crew as alarms began wailing across the deck of his ship. The feed cut out as the communication satellites severed the signal. Adrian turned to Nora, his eyes burning with admiration and fierce love. He pulled her against his chest and kissed her passionately in front of Dominic and Shaw. Dominic shook his head in disbelieving awe, stating that he had spent twenty years in tactical warfare and had never seen an entire mercenary fleet surrendered before a single shot was fired on land.
