Chapter 1 - Shattered Glass and the Silent Nursery

The second blow of the heavy decorative limestone obliterated the tempered safety glass into thousands of dull, pebble-sized fragments. A wave of suffocating, oven-like heat poured out through the jagged breach, instantly hitting Adrian Vale across the face. It didn’t smell like a luxury vehicle interior; it smelled like scorching leather, overheated synthetic carpet, and trapped despair.

Adrian didn’t hesitate for a single microsecond. Disregarding the sharp edges that instantly tore through his crisp white Italian cuffs and bit deeply into the flesh of his forearms, he reached deep inside to unlock the heavy door from the interior latch. Blood dripped down onto the black leather upholstery, but he registered no physical pain. The only thing that existed in the universe was the silence coming from the back seat.

The door swung wide open. The heat radiating from inside was so intense it made the July air feel almost cool by comparison. There, strapped into a backward-facing car seat, was five-month-old Owen. The baby’s skin was mottled, crimson, and burning hot to the touch. His small chest moved in shallow, erratic hitches, and his lips were dry, pale, and parted. He was no longer crying. He was too exhausted, dehydrated, and overheated to make a single sound.

""Call my personal physician and summon a trauma transport unit now!"" Adrian roared, his voice trembling with a terrifying blend of feral rage and sheer panic that caused the armed guards standing fifty feet away to jump into immediate motion.

Adrian carefully unbuckled the harness with trembling, bloodied fingers. Lifting the limp, burning infant against his chest, he turned around. Natalie Cross stood frozen ten feet away, her hands still clutching the remote key fob against her designer linen blazer. Her eyes darted frantically between Adrian, the shattered window, and the driveway gates.

""Adrian, listen to me, the electronic lock jammed!"" Natalie pleaded, her voice pitched high, vibrating with an unnatural nervousness. ""I was only inside the house for five minutes to drop off Caroline's old photo albums! The fob wouldn't unlock it, I swear! I was just about to tell security when Maisie ran inside!""

Hannah rushed forward with a soaked, cool kitchen towel she had miraculously brought from the house. She looked terrified to touch the billionaire mafia boss, but her maternal instinct outweighed her fear. ""Mr. Vale, let me cool his forehead gently. Don't use ice, just lukewarm water to bring his core temperature down safely.""

Little Maisie stood beside her mother, her strawberry-red dress fluttering in the breeze, her toy stethoscope clutched tightly in her small fist. ""He was so hot, Mr. Vale. He was crying like a tiny kitten, and then he went to sleep.""

Adrian looked at Maisie, a sudden lump forming in his throat. If this four-year-old child had not been playing near the garden wall, if she hadn’t defied the adults and barged straight into his private study, his only son would have been brain-dead or dead within another fifteen minutes.

""You saved my son’s life, Maisie,"" Adrian whispered hoarsely, kissing the top of Owen’s damp forehead as the baby let out a faint, pitiful whimper. The sound was music to Adrian’s ears—he was breathing. He was fighting.

Behind him, Victor Shaw and his associate Grant Mercer stepped onto the driveway. Victor adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, looking distinctly unsettled. ""Adrian, let the medical staff take the boy. We have the emergency custody hearing tomorrow morning at nine. We cannot afford any reckless actions that might jeopardize your standing before Judge Sterling.""

Adrian turned his gaze toward his trusted lawyer of eleven years. His cold, dark eyes seemed to pierce right through Victor’s skull. Something was fundamentally rotten here. Natalie had claimed she was in the house for five minutes, but Victor himself had told Adrian thirty minutes ago that Natalie had personally told the housekeeper Owen was asleep upstairs in his crib.

""Nobody leaves this estate,"" Adrian decreed, his voice dropping into a deadly, quiet cadence that made the summer heat feel freezing cold. ""Lock the gates. Put snipers on the perimeter. If anyone attempts to cross that gate line without my explicit command, put a bullet in their tire, and then in their knee.""
