Chapter 8 - Sins of the Syndicate

The tires of the four armored SUVs screamed against the wet asphalt as the convoy tore out of the estate gates, cutting through the deserted highways at over one hundred miles per hour. The rain had ceased, leaving the road slick and gleaming like black ice under the amber sodium streetlamps.
Adrien checked the real-time satellite tracking feed displayed on the tactical monitor mounted inside the command vehicle. Three red blips representing Donati’s assault vehicles were clustered around a single blue transponder on the industrial access ramp of the abandoned Republic Steel complex. The blue transponder was Lucian’s pinned-down transport.
""Donati brought three modified gun trucks,"" Dante reported, analyzing the thermal imaging stream beamed from a private surveillance drone circling overhead. ""They’re using military-grade thermal scopes and high-caliber rifles. They managed to breach the transport’s rear hatch. They’ve pulled Victor out, but they haven't cleared the ramp yet.""
""They aren't trying to escape,"" Adrien observed, his eyes narrowing as he studied the defensive positions the Donati vehicles were taking. ""They’re setting up an ambush zone. They know Lucian called for backup. They’re using Victor as bait to draw me out into the open industrial yard.""
""Then we flank them?"" Dante asked.
""No,"" Adrien said, a dark, feral smile spreading across his face. ""We give them exactly what they’re waiting for. Full frontal breach. But we don't slow down.""
Two minutes later, the massive rusted silhouette of the Republic Steel mill loomed against the graying horizon like a decaying iron monster. Through the swirling fog, bright muzzle flashes lit up the gravel yard in rapid, rhythmic bursts. Lucian’s armored transport was on its side, black smoke billowing from its crushed undercarriage, while three black pickup trucks mounted with heavy machine guns poured continuous fire into the wreckage.
Beside the center truck, Carlo Donati—the ruthless, silver-haired underboss of the Donati family—stood with a smoking assault rifle, barking orders at his mercenaries. Next to him, Victor Salvatore sat on the tailgate of the truck, the canvas hood ripped from his bloody face, his expression twisted into manic, desperate jubilation.
""Moretti’s coming!"" Victor screamed over the gunfire. ""Kill him! Wipe out his entire security detail and the city is ours!""
""Shut your mouth and get in the cab!"" Carlo Donati roared, turning toward the sound of approaching engines.
Through the heavy fog, the four Moretti SUVs appeared like roaring black phantoms. They didn't slow down at the perimeter gate; they accelerated.
""Brace!"" Adrien commanded over the tactical radio.
The lead Moretti vehicle, reinforced with a heavy steel battering ram, smashed through the chain-link gate and plowed directly into the flank of the first Donati gun truck at sixty miles per hour. The sound of crumpling steel and shattering safety glass tore through the night like an artillery shell. The Donati truck flipped over, crushing two gunmen beneath its rolling frame and sending a shower of sparks fifty feet into the air.
Adrien kicked his door open before his SUV had even come to a complete halt. He leveled his assault rifle and unleashed controlled, three-round bursts into the surviving mercenaries scrambling around the wreckage. Dante and eight heavily armed Moretti operatives poured out behind him, advancing in a synchronized, lethal sweep.
The Donati mercenaries, completely overwhelmed by the sheer ferocity and precision of the counter-assault, broke formation within ninety seconds. Four dropped instantly under Adrien’s relentless advance; two others threw their weapons down and fled into the dark maze of the abandoned mill.
Carlo Donati dove behind the engine block of the remaining pickup truck, returning wild, erratic fire. ""Adrien! Hold your fire! Let’s talk! We can negotiate a treaty!""
""You forfeited your right to a treaty when you ambushed my men on open asphalt, Carlo!"" Adrien shouted back, advancing step by step, his rifle barking with deadly rhythm, punching through the truck’s thin sheet metal and forcing Carlo further into a corner.
Victor Salvatore realized the battle was lost for the second time that night. Terrified of falling into Adrien’s hands again, he scrambled off the truck bed and bolted toward the rusted entrance of the primary furnace building, clutching his broken arm to his chest.
Adrien saw him run. ""Dante! Secure Carlo! Victor is mine!""
Adrien lowered his rifle, drawing his .45 sidearm, and sprinted into the cavernous darkness of the abandoned steel plant.
The interior of the mill was an echoing labyrinth of rusted catwalks, towering blast furnaces, and shattered concrete pits. The only light came from the pale moonlight filtering through the broken corrugated roof high above.
""Victor!"" Adrien’s voice boomed through the empty steel chamber, multiplying into a dozen menacing echoes. ""You ran all the way from Europe just to die in the dirt of Chicago!""
A wild, desperate gunshot cracked from behind a massive electrical transformer thirty yards ahead. The bullet ricocheted loudly off an iron girder near Adrien’s head.
Adrien didn't flinch. He didn't take cover. He continued walking forward, his footsteps slow, steady, and utterly terrifying.
""You can't kill me, Adrien!"" Victor’s voice cracked from the shadows, hysterical and breathy. ""The syndicates will never allow it! If you kill a founding family head, the Commission will wipe the Morettis off the map!""
""The Commission doesn't protect corpses, Victor,"" Adrien replied, his voice calm and smooth as silk. ""And as far as the world knows... you died two years ago in France.""
Adrien closed the distance, rounding the corner of the rusted transformer.
Victor was backed against the safety railing of an open industrial slag pit that dropped fifty feet into a flooded concrete basin below. He had his gun raised with both trembling hands, tears of sheer panic streaming down his bruised, dirt-streaked face.
""Stay back!"" Victor shrieked. ""I’m warning you!""
May you like
Adrien didn't stop. He stepped directly into Victor’s point-blank range, staring down the barrel of the weapon without a single trace of hesitation in his cold, predatory eyes.
""Shoot,"" Adrien whispered. ""Or drop it."""
