Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Legacy

Victor lunged forward against his iron restraints, his face twisting into a mask of pure fury. ""Shut her up! She’s fabricating it! She’s Lorenzo’s puppet, just like her father was!""

""Be quiet,"" Adrien commanded, stepping between Victor and Isabella, his broad frame completely shielding her. ""Let her speak.""

Isabella didn't cower. She opened the brittle brass clasp of the folio. The scent of aged parchment, dry cedar, and dried ink drifted through the damp basement air. She carefully turned the first several pages, revealing pristine carbon copies of bank transactions, Western Union receipts, and handwritten letters bearing official notarized seals dating back to the late summer of 1994.

""Look at the signatures, Marcus,"" Isabella said, sliding a specific document directly in front of the former security chief. ""My father was the notary on record for the port authority trust. Lorenzo Moretti wasn't transferring those accounts to frame your father. He was transferring them into an irrevocable trust fund established under your mother's maiden name.""

Marcus stared down at the faded blue ink. His breath hitched in his throat. His eyes darted frantically across the lines of precise legal terminology, stopping at the bottom of the page where two signatures rested: Lorenzo Moretti’s bold, angular script, and right beside it, the looping, familiar signature of his own father, Arthur Vale.

""This... this can't be real,"" Marcus stammered, shaking his head in frantic denial. ""Arthur died in an alley behind Pier 42. They said it was a botched robbery over twenty dollars.""

""It was a hit ordered by Dominic Salvatore—Victor’s father,"" Isabella stated with absolute conviction. ""Dominic discovered that Arthur had gone to Lorenzo with evidence that the Salvatore faction was smuggling untraceable military munitions through the commercial terminals. Arthur refused to alter the manifests. When Dominic realized Arthur couldn't be bought, he had him killed and attempted to frame Lorenzo for the operation by altering the secondary customs logs.""

Isabella turned another page, pointing to a series of wire transfers. ""Lorenzo knew he couldn't publicly avenge your father without triggering an all-out civil war that would have wiped out both families and invited the Department of Justice to tear the entire city apart. So he did what he had to do. He quietly dismantled Dominic Salvatore's financial backing from the inside out, fed the real smuggling records to the FBI, and took you into his own house to keep you safe from the Salvatore hit squads.""

Marcus’s entire body began to tremble. The realization crashed over him like a tidal wave of ice water, shattering the foundational belief that had fueled his hatred for over a decade. ""No... no, no, no... God, no...""

""Lorenzo didn't tell you the truth because he knew you,"" Isabella continued, her tone softening with a tragic pity. ""You were hotheaded, violent, and consumed by grief. If Lorenzo had told a nineteen-year-old Marcus Vale that the Salvatore family had murdered his father, you would have marched into their compound with a shotgun and been dead before sundown. He protected you by taking the blame upon his own shoulders.""

Adrien looked down at the documents, then back at his wife. ""How long have you known about this, Bella?""

""Since the day my father passed away two years ago,"" she confessed, meeting Adrien’s piercing gaze. ""He gave me the key to his private deposit box and told me to open it only if the Salvatore name ever resurfaced, or if Marcus ever showed signs of turning. My father knew that Victor was hiding in Europe, rebuilding his capital through Eastern European syndicates. He warned me that Victor would eventually use Marcus’s lingering bitterness as an open doorway into this house.""

Victor let out a guttural scream of frustration, thrashing violently against his chains until the steel bit deep into his wrists, drawing fresh blood. ""It’s a lie! It’s all a manufactured fairy tale! You Morettis rewrite history to make yourselves look like kings, but you're just butchers in tailored suits!""

Adrien turned slowly toward Victor. The look in Adrien’s eyes was no longer one of boiling anger; it had settled into a cold, terrifying emptiness. The enigma that had haunted his family for over a decade was finally stripped bare. There was no noble vendetta. There was only a pathetic, greedy heir clinging to the decayed lies of his dead father.

""You didn't just come here for a ledger, did you, Victor?"" Adrien asked, his voice chillingly level. ""You came here because your overseas empire is bankrupt. The European cartels squeezed you out. You needed the Moretti cash reserves, the institutional accounts, and the political blackmail files to pay off your debts in Marseille before they sent their own cleanup crews to hunt you down.""

Victor froze. The wild defiance in his eyes flickered, replaced by the sheer, naked dread of a man who realizes his final bluff has been thoroughly exposed.

""Dante,"" Adrien said without turning around.

""Yes, Boss?""

""Take Marcus into the holding cell down the hall. Unchain his wrists, leave him a bottle of water, and lock the door.""

Marcus looked up, tears streaming freely down his bruised and swollen face. ""Adrien... please. Kill me. Just put a bullet in my head right now. After what I did... after what I let into your home... I don't deserve to breathe another breath.""

Adrien stared down at the man who had taught him how to shoot, the man who had betrayed his wife and mother based on a fabricated ghost story.

""Death is too clean for what you did tonight, Marcus,"" Adrien said softly. ""You are going to sit in the dark, and you are going to live with the knowledge of whose house you helped violate.""
