Chapter 7 - The Midnight Ambush

By three in the morning, the mansion had returned to an unnatural, eerie quiet. The blood on the marble floors had been meticulously scrubbed away by specialized cleanup crews. The bodies of Victor Salvatore’s mercenaries had been removed without a trace, transported to an incinerator facility in an industrial wasteland outside the county lines. The bullet holes in the sitting room were already being patched by discreet carpenters who asked no questions and charged extraordinary fees for their silence.
Adrien sat on the leather sofa in the master bedroom, his shirt unbuttoned, while Isabella gently applied fresh gauze and medical tape to the bullet graze on his shoulder. Her touch was tender, but her movements were practiced and precise. She had lived in this world long enough to know how to patch a wound without flinching.
""You did the right thing with Marcus,"" Isabella said softly, smoothing down the edges of the medical tape. ""Your father would have been proud of how you handled tonight.""
Adrien let out a soft sigh, turning his head to look at her. ""My father was a master of secrets, Bella. But secrets are like termites. They eat away at the foundation until the whole ceiling collapses on the people you love. If you hadn't kept that folio safe, this house would have burned down tonight.""
""We saved it together,"" she replied, resting her palms against his uninjured shoulder. ""That’s what a marriage is, Adrien. Even in our world.""
Suddenly, the phone on the nightstand buzzed with intense, rapid vibrations. It was the secure red-line mobile—the device that only five men on earth had the clearance to ring.
Adrien answered it immediately, putting it on speaker. ""Adrien.""
It was Lucian’s voice, but the calm precision from earlier was completely gone. In the background, the violent rattle of automatic gunfire and screeching tires tore through the receiver.
""Boss! We have a secondary breach! It wasn't just Victor!"" Lucian shouted, his breath ragged. ""We’re on Interstate Ninety, five miles north of the city limits! The transport convoy carrying Victor to the Joliet quarry was ambushed!""
Adrien surged to his feet, the fatigue vanishing in a microsecond. ""Who hit you? Talk to me!""
""The Donati family!"" Lucian yelled over the deafening roar of an explosion. ""Donati formed an alliance with Victor before he entered Chicago! They knew Victor was making a play for the ledger tonight! When Victor’s transponder went dark, Donati sent a full hit squad to intercept the transport! They blew the rear axle off our armored SUV with an RPG! They’re trying to pull Victor out alive!""
Adrien’s eyes hardened into black flint. The Donati syndicate was the largest remaining rival faction in northern Illinois. For three years, they had observed an uneasy, heavily armed truce with the Moretti family. If Donati was actively extracting Victor, it meant this wasn't an isolated home invasion—it was a coordinated, full-scale coup aimed at decapitating the Moretti leadership before sunrise.
""Where is the convoy right now?"" Adrien demanded, reaching for his tactical vest hanging in the wardrobe.
""Trapped on the access ramp near the old steel mill off Exit Forty-Two!"" Lucian replied, gunfire chopping through his words. ""We’re pinned down behind the engine block! We have three men down! We can't hold them for more than five minutes!""
""Hold your ground! I’m coming with the rapid response team!"" Adrien barked, terminating the call.
Isabella was already on her feet, holding his tactical harness and two fresh magazines for his combat sidearm. There was no panic in her eyes; only the fierce, terrifying resolve of a mafia queen who understood that survival required absolute ruthlessness.
""Donati wants an open war?"" she asked, her voice steady and lethal.
""He wants my head on a platter so he can carve up the midwest ports,"" Adrien said, strapping the Kevlar vest tightly across his chest and racking the slide of his customized pistol. ""He thinks because I was defending my home, my main strike force is disorganized.""
""End it, Adrien,"" Isabella whispered, stepping close and placing a fierce, commanding kiss directly onto his lips. ""Don't just push them back. Cut off the head of the snake. Make sure no one ever thinks about touching this family again.""
Adrien looked into her eyes, feeling an electric surge of pure, unadulterated power coursing through his veins. ""I’ll be back before dawn.""
He sprinted down the private service stairs, emerging into the subterranean motor pool where four heavily armored matte-black SUVs were already idling, their engines roaring like caged beasts. Dante, having returned from securing Marcus, was already in the front passenger seat of the lead vehicle, racking a combat shotgun.

""Every available soldier is mobilized, Boss,"" Dante said, his teeth bared in an aggressive grin. ""Thirty men. Heavy ordnance. Donati just signed his own death warrant.""
Adrien threw himself into the back seat of the command SUV. ""Floor it,"" he ordered. ""Let’s show Chicago who owns this city.""
