Chapter 5 - Shadows In The Snow

By nightfall, an uneasy tension settled over the estate.

Vincent had doubled the security perimeter. Black SUVs with tinted windows were parked along the curbs outside, their engines purring quietly in the freezing dark. I stood on the balcony of my room, staring out at the Manhattan skyline, breathing the crisp night air. For eight months, that skyline had been an indifferent monster that swallowed my dignity. Tonight, it felt manageable.

A quiet tap sounded at my door. It was Vincent. He had stripped off his tie, the collar of his white dress shirt unbuttoned, looking weary but vigilant.

""You should be resting,"" he said, stepping out onto the balcony beside me. He didn't invade my space, maintaining a respectful distance that put me instantly at ease.

""I can't shut my brain off,"" I confessed. ""When you're out there on the street, sleep is dangerous. If you fall into a deep sleep, someone steals your coat, or you don't wake up from the cold. My body hasn't figured out that it's safe yet.""

Vincent looked out over the glowing city. ""Safety is an illusion in my world, Anna. But inside these walls, I promise you, nothing will touch you.""

""Why are you doing all this for me, Vincent?"" I asked, turning to face him. ""Clara's promise was one thing, but you're risking a war with her family. I heard Julian yesterday. They think you're losing your edge.""

A faint, self-deprecating smile touched his lips. ""Let them think that. Clara was the light of my life. When she died, this house became a tomb. Emma stopped talking for three months. I became the ruthless ghost everyone in this city expected me to be."" He paused, looking at me with an intensity that made my heart flutter unexpectedly. ""When Emma ran to you on those church steps, it was the first time in two years she reached out to another woman. You didn't ask who we were. You didn't want money. You just hugged my daughter back like she mattered.""

Before I could answer, the sharp, thunderous crack of a gunshot shattered the night silence.

The glass railing three feet from my head exploded into a million crystalline shards.

""Get down!"" Vincent roared.

In a fraction of a second, his powerful arm wrapped around my waist, tackling me hard onto the stone balcony floor as a second round whistled through the air where my torso had been. His heavy body completely shielded mine, his broad back absorbing the falling debris.

Alarms wailed through the mansion, piercing and deafening. Red emergency lights bathed the terrace in bloody crimson.

""Marco!"" Vincent barked into a radio pinned to his collar, his voice chillingly calm despite the chaos. ""Sniper on the north rooftop across the avenue! Lock down the lower levels! Move Emma to the safe room now!""

I lay pinned beneath Vincent's chest, my hands trembling violently against the fabric of his shirt. His heartbeat was slow, steady, and terrifyingly controlled.

He looked down into my terrified eyes, brushing a stray lock of hair away from my face with a steady thumb. ""I told you, Anna. Nobody touches you. Breathe. I've got you.""
