Chapter 3 - Whispers In The Penthouse

The water in the deep porcelain tub turned a faint gray before I finally felt clean. Soaking in steaming water with lavender bath oils felt like waking up from a nightmare into someone else's paradise. When I emerged, wrapped in a plush cream-colored cashmere robe that felt lighter than air, a silver tray sat on the vanity containing warm potato leek soup, sourdough bread, and chamomile tea.

A soft knock sounded at the door. Dr. Alvarez, a soft-spoken gentleman with silver-rimmed glasses, examined my feet with practiced gentleness.

""Second-degree frostbite on the right heel and left toes, but no necrotic tissue,"" he diagnosed, applying an antibiotic salve that felt miraculously cool. ""Another forty-eight hours out in that blizzard, Miss Hale, and you would have lost those toes. You’re severely malnourished, but rest and balanced nutrition will restore you.""

After he left, I wandered toward the full-length mirror. I barely recognized the hollow-cheeked girl staring back at me. My dark brown hair was damp and combed straight, my collarbones protruding sharply beneath the soft cashmere.

Downstairs, the quiet murmurs of the house grew tense. Driven by a lingering survivor's instinct to know my surroundings, I quietly padded down the carpeted hallway toward the grand mezzanine overlooking the study.

The heavy oak doors were cracked open. Vincent stood behind an enormous mahogany desk, leaning forward on his knuckles. Sitting across from him was a man in an expensive gray suit with slicked-back hair and gold cufflinks.

""Vincent, you've lost your mind,"" the man hissed, his voice trembling with irritation. ""You pulled a homeless stray off the street on Christmas Eve and brought her into your private residence? Do you know what the families are saying? The Castellano syndicate is already pushing boundaries in Brooklyn. We cannot look weak or erratic right now!""

""Watch your tongue, Julian,"" Vincent said, his voice deadly quiet, vibrating with controlled menace. ""Clara died two years ago, and I spent twenty-four months searching for the daughter of the woman she loved like a mother. Now she is under my roof. That makes her family. Touch her, or speak out of turn again, and you'll find out if I’ve gone soft.""

""I am Clara's brother!"" Julian snapped back, slamming a palm on the armrest. ""If Clara left an estate, it belongs to the Bennett bloodline! Not some beggar girl whose mother happened to bandage Clara twenty-five years ago! You gave that girl access to Clara's safe deposit boxes? What if there are records in there? What if—""

Julian choked on his own words, suddenly catching himself.

Vincent slowly tilted his head, his eyes narrowing into slits. ""Records of what, Julian?""

A suffocating silence descended over the room. Julian swallowed hard, adjusting his tie with shaking fingers. ""Nothing. Just... company ledgers. Clara was paranoid during her final days. You know how the cancer affected her mind.""

May you like

""Clara’s mind was sharper than yours until the hour she drew her last breath,"" Vincent said softly. ""The safe deposit box at Manhattan Central Bank will be opened on December 26th by Anna Hale. If I find out that you had anything to do with Margaret Hale's sudden eviction and the fraudulent debt that forced her daughter onto the street... a bullet will be the kindest thing you receive from me.""

Julian backed out of the study, pale as a corpse. I ducked into the shadows of the archway, holding my breath as he stormed past, his fists clenched tight. My mother’s sudden eviction five months after her death hadn’t been an accident. It had been calculated. And the man responsible was sleeping under this very roof.
