Chapter 2 - The Golden Cage

The black Maybach glided through the snow-choked streets of Manhattan like a phantom. Inside, the climate control breathed steady, 72-degree warmth that made my frostbitten skin prickle with sharp, stinging needles. I sat on the hand-stitched leather seat, terrified that the grease on my ragged hem would ruin the pristine upholstery.

Emma sat wedged between us, refusing to move, her small mittens clinging to the sleeve of Vincent's oversized coat that still enveloped me. Across from us sat Marco, a scarred man with cauliflower ears and an eagle tattoo climbing up his throat. He watched me not with hostility, but with intense, calculating scrutiny.

""Marco,"" Vincent said, not looking away from the frosted window. ""Call Dr. Alvarez. Have him wait at the townhouse. Full checkup, blood panel, frostbite treatment.""

""Right away, boss,"" the man replied, tapping on an encrypted phone.

""Mr. Moretti, please,"" I stammered, shrinking into the corner. ""You don't have to do this. A bowl of soup and a dry pair of socks at a shelter is more than enough. I don't want to be a burden. I can't pay you back.""

Vincent turned his head. Up close, under the car’s soft ambient lights, the sharp lines of his face were striking. He possessed the striking, dangerous beauty of a man forged in conflict, with silver flecks at his temples and an old scar slicing through his left eyebrow.

""You don't owe me a dime,"" he said, his tone brooking no argument. ""The trust Clara established contains a townhouse in Brooklyn Heights and a four-million-dollar portfolio. Legally, it has been yours since your mother passed. My legal team couldn't locate you because your identity was flagged by a predatory debt-collection agency that filed fraudulent liens against your Social Security number.""

My breath seized. ""What? How?""

""We'll find out,"" Vincent murmured, and for a fleeting second, the terrifying mob boss showed through his calm demeanor. His eyes darkened into cold flint. ""Nobody steals from Margaret Hale's daughter in my city. Not while I draw breath.""

Within twenty minutes, the car pulled through iron gates in the Upper East Side. A five-story limestone mansion towered against the falling snow, its windows ablaze with warm, golden light. Uniformed staff were already lined up inside the grand foyer as the heavy mahogany doors swung open.

A warm scent of roasting rosemary chicken, pine needles, and vanilla drifted into the cold courtyard. A stern-faced older woman in a charcoal dress bustled forward, her eyes widening as she took in my tangled, dirt-streaked hair, my bruised bare feet, and the massive mafia overcoat swallowing my five-foot-four frame.

""Mrs. Gable,"" Vincent announced as he stepped inside, carrying Emma in his arms. ""This is Anna Hale. She is our guest of honor. Clara’s guest. Draw a bath in the third-floor master suite, bring up clean silk loungewear, and prepare a meal of broth and roasted vegetables. Nothing too heavy for her stomach tonight.""

""Of course, Mr. Moretti,"" the housekeeper replied instantly, bowing her head. When she turned to me, the initial shock melted into a sudden, deep pity. ""Come with me, my dear. Let's get you warm.""

As I stepped onto the heated marble floor, leaving faint, damp smudges of gray slush behind, I glanced back. Vincent was watching me from the archway. For the first time in eight grueling months, the relentless voice in my head telling me I wouldn't survive the night finally fell silent.
